Both platforms tell you what to upload, and the numbers are generous. Only one of them tells you what it will ever send back out: Vimeo publishes a maximum playback bitrate, and it is well under what it asks you to hand over. Google publishes no delivery figure for YouTube at all. Here is what each one is on the record for, the terms that govern your file once it lands, the caps that actually bite, and which of the two fits the job you have.

What each one publishes

Both publish an upload target, and one does it
in far more detail than the other.

Start with what is actually on the record. Both platforms tell you what to hand them. YouTube does it as a table, resolution by resolution, split by frame rate and by dynamic range. Vimeo does it as a range inside its compression guidelines. Every number in the table below is a recommended upload figure. None of them is a delivery figure, and reading them as one is the mistake this page exists to prevent.

YouTube's recommended upload encoding settings, fetched 3 September 2026. These are the bitrates YouTube asks you to upload, not the bitrates it sends to a viewer. Its recommended container is MP4 with the moov atom at the front of the file, video in H.264, audio in AAC-LC, Opus or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz.

Vimeo’s equivalent guidance is a band rather than a grid: 30 to 60 Mbps as the recommended upload bitrate for 4K, in its video and audio compression guidelines. Its upgrade page adds that videos can stream up to 4K Ultra HD, which is a statement about resolution and not about bytes per second.

Now hold that number next to the next section, because it is the clearest single fact on this page. Vimeo asks you to upload 4K at 30 to 60 Mbps, and its playback guidelines put the maximum it will ever serve at 22 Mbps in standard H.264. The gap between what a platform asks you to send and what it will ever send back out is the whole story of hosted video, and Vimeo is the one platform here honest enough to let you measure it.

The finding

One platform publishes its ceiling;
the other publishes nothing.

This is the part worth carrying away, and it is the opposite of what most comparisons of these two platforms assume. The transparency runs in Vimeo’s favour, and the number it is transparent about is low.

Vimeo’s guidelines for determining playback resolution give a maximum video bitrate of 22 Mbps for 4K in standard H.264, 16 Mbps for 4K and above in HDR or HEVC, 7 Mbps for 1080p at 60fps in standard H.264, and 5 Mbps for 1080p in HDR or HEVC. Vimeo describes these as maximums for its conversion and playback specs, and notes that the actual bitrate may be lower depending on video complexity.

Google publishes recommended upload bitrates for YouTube in a detailed table, and no delivery or playback bitrate anywhere. There is no maximum, no range and no ladder on the record for what a YouTube viewer receives.

So on one platform you can plan around a published ceiling. On the other you cannot, because there is nothing to plan around. Both help centers are cited in the sources below.

YouTube is explicit about the transformation while staying silent about its size. Its help center states that YouTube always re-encodes videos to optimize their playback quality. That sentence tells you the file the viewer streams is not the file you exported, without giving you any way to know how far apart the two are.

Vimeo publishes no equivalent sentence about re-encoding, and this page will not put words in its mouth. It does publish conversion and playback specs, with the maximums above, and those maximums are the useful thing. A 4K master exported at 30 to 60 Mbps, as Vimeo itself recommends, reaches a viewer at a maximum of 22 Mbps, possibly less. That is not a criticism of Vimeo’s honesty. It is a description of what a streaming ladder is for, and the mechanics of why the difference shows up on screen are in the guide on why uploads look worse.

A portfolio host is also, quietly, a place your work sits. It is worth knowing what each platform does with the master once the upload finishes, because the day you need it back is rarely the day you planned for.

Vimeo

The source file is permanently deleted by default for Free and Basic members, and for paid members who have not switched on source file storage. The setting is a paid opt-in, it applies only to future uploads, and Vimeo warns that source files may be deleted and may not be recoverable if the subscription ends or the feature is turned off. Pulling originals through the API needs a Standard plan or above. It is a real feature and it works, on a live subscription, going forward.

YouTube

You can download MP4 files of videos you uploaded, in either 720p or 360p depending on the video size, up to five times per day per video. That is a viewing copy, not a master. YouTube is a distribution channel that happens to hold a copy of your work, and it has never claimed otherwise.

There is one file. It is the one you uploaded, it is the one that streams for browser-decodable codecs, and it is the one that downloads. ProRes 422, ProRes 4444 and DNxHR are hosted for client download rather than streamed, because browsers do not decode them. 8K plays when the viewer's hardware decodes it.

The practical rule for either platform is the same one every editor learns once: the upload is not the backup. Keep your masters on disks you own, and treat a hosting account as distribution. The difference is that on one of the three the distribution copy and the master happen to be the same bytes.

Reach and money

One of them has an audience;
one of them sells ads against it.

These two facts are the real axis of the choice, and they pull in opposite directions.

YouTube has reach and Vimeo does not. There is no hedge to add. If discovery matters to your business, if you want a search result and a suggested-video slot and a subscriber count, YouTube is the platform and no comparison table changes that. Its visibility settings are worth understanding before you use it as a private portfolio, though: unlisted videos can be seen and shared by anyone with the link, and they stay out of YouTube’s search results unless someone adds the video to a public playlist.

The price of that reach is written into the Terms of Service. You grant YouTube the right to monetize your content on the service, and that monetization may include displaying ads on or within content or charging users a fee for access. For a music video chasing views, that is the deal and it is a fair one. For a reel a commissioner opens from your email signature, an ad in front of your first frame is a cost with no upside.

Vimeo is unambiguous in the other direction and deserves the credit: it states it never puts ads before, during, or after your videos, even on its Free plan. That is a clear win for Vimeo over YouTube on this axis, and it is most of why filmmakers have kept Vimeo tabs open for fifteen years.

Caps

One platform caps on length,
the other on storage and delivery.

The two platforms limit you in different currencies, which is why a straight comparison of their plans rarely helps. YouTube limits the individual upload. Vimeo limits the account.

YouTube limits the file

By default you can upload videos up to 15 minutes long, and verified accounts can upload videos longer than that. The hard ceiling is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. There is no published account storage cap, because storing your library is not what the service is for.

Vimeo limits the account

Storage ceilings by tier: Free 1 GB, Starter 2 TB, Standard 4 TB, Advanced 7 TB. Delivery is metered at a 2 TB per month bandwidth threshold on the self-serve paid tiers. Cross it and you have seven days to respond and reach a resolution, with no changes to the account during that time. Vimeo also states that over 99 percent of users stay below the threshold and are not charged extra, which is the honest counterweight to any argument built on that cap.

For most filmmakers most of the time, neither cap is the thing that hurts. Vimeo’s own 99 percent figure says as much. The cap becomes real in exactly two situations: a film that gets shared widely inside one month, and a delivery-heavy studio sending large masters to many people. If you are neither, do not choose a host on the bandwidth line.

Practical

What to export
for each of the three.

An upload recommendation is only useful if you act on it, so here is what the published guidance means at the export dialog. Two of these are about feeding an encoder well. The third is about the file arriving as you made it.

For YouTube

Follow the table above for your resolution, frame rate and dynamic range, then match the container guidance: MP4, with the moov atom at the front of the file for fast start, video in H.264, audio in AAC-LC, Opus or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz. Going far above the recommendation mostly buys upload time, because the re-encode happens either way. Going below it hands the encoder less than it needs, and that loss is the one you will see.

For Vimeo

The compression guidelines put 4K at 30 to 60 Mbps on upload, and the playback guidelines put the maximum a viewer receives at 22 Mbps in standard H.264. So the top of that band is not buying a better stream. It is buying a better source for the conversion, and, if you keep source-file storage switched on and your subscription live, a better copy to download later. Both are good reasons to export high. Neither raises the ceiling.

For uncompressed.io

Export the film the way you want it seen, because that is the file that plays. A high-bitrate H.264 or HEVC export, in the region of 100 to 200 Mbps for 4K, streams at exactly that rate to anyone whose hardware decodes it. There is no ladder to aim at and no encoder to satisfy, so the ceiling is your storage plan and your viewer's connection, not a published maximum.

One consequence is easy to miss. On a platform that re-encodes, exporting at a very high bitrate is close to pointless past the recommendation, because you are paying upload time for detail the encoder is about to discard. On a platform that does not re-encode, the export bitrate is the only decision that matters, because it survives to the viewer unchanged. The honest answer

Pick the platform that fits the job,
and it is often not this one.

Three different jobs hide behind the phrase filmmaker portfolio. They have three different right answers, and only one of them is us.

If the goal is an audience: YouTube

Use YouTube and accept the re-encode. Discovery is the whole product, the upload is free, and no amount of bitrate makes up for a page nobody finds. Read the visibility settings before you rely on unlisted as privacy, and read the monetization clause in the Terms before you assume your reel plays clean.

If the goal is a clean presentation page: Vimeo

Vimeo does this well and has done it for years. It has said in writing that it never runs ads on your videos, its embed controls let paid plans hide the logo and player chrome, and it commits to no generative AI training on hosted videos without your consent. If that is the job, Vimeo is a good answer and this page is not going to invent a reason for you to leave.

If the file itself has to survive: uncompressed.io

This is the narrow case: the grade has to arrive intact, the client is judging the image, and a re-encode you cannot inspect is not acceptable. Nothing is transcoded, so the file you export is the file that plays and the file that downloads. If your work does not depend on that, one of the other two columns is cheaper and easier.

Where we are the wrong choice

uncompressed.io has no audience, no recommendation engine and no search results to appear in. If you need to be found, we cannot help you and YouTube can. We also cost money at every tier past 1 GB, where both of the others have a free plan you can put a reel on today. And if an ad-free embed on a well-known player is all you were ever after, Vimeo already solved that, on the record, including on its free tier.

Why the third column looks strange

There is no delivery bitrate here
because there is no transcode to describe.

Both platforms in this comparison were built to serve a stream, not to store a master. That is a legitimate design, and it explains everything above: the upload recommendations exist to feed an encoder, the playback maximums exist because a ladder has to end somewhere, and the download-back rules follow from a copy that was never meant to be the copy of record.

The third column answers a different question. The player streams the exact bytes that were uploaded, so the published upload figure and the delivered figure are the same number. That is why there is no delivery bitrate on this site to publish: a 4K export at 150 Mbps reaches the viewer at 150 Mbps, next to a published maximum of 22 Mbps for 4K H.264 on Vimeo and no published figure at all on YouTube. Browser-decodable codecs stream, meaning H.264, HEVC and AV1. ProRes 422, ProRes 4444 and DNxHR are hosted for client download rather than streamed. 8K plays when the viewer’s hardware decodes it, which is a real caveat and not a footnote. Storage is the only meter, from 1 GB free up to 2 TB hot plus 2 TB cold on Vault, and no bandwidth is metered on any plan.

Can I download my own upload back from YouTube?

Only as a compressed copy. YouTube lets you download MP4 files of videos you uploaded in either 720p or 360p depending on the video size, and you can download an individual video up to five times per day. If the master is gone from your drives, YouTube is not where you get it back.

Does Vimeo keep my original file?

Only if you opted in and keep paying. By Vimeo's own help center, the source file is permanently deleted by default for Free and Basic members and for paid members who have not enabled source file storage. Enabling it applies to future uploads only and does not restore files already removed, and Vimeo warns that source files may be deleted and may not be recoverable if the subscription ends or the feature is disabled. Will YouTube run ads on my portfolio reel?

Its Terms of Service reserve the right: you grant YouTube the right to monetize your content on the service, and that monetization may include displaying ads on or within content or charging users a fee for access. Vimeo takes the opposite position and states that it never puts ads before, during, or after your videos, even on its Free plan. If an ad in front of a director's reel is unacceptable to you, that single line settles the choice.

Should I use Vimeo or YouTube for a client-facing portfolio?

If you want to be found by people who are not already looking for you, use YouTube and accept the re-encode. If you want a clean, ad-free page that a commissioner opens from your email signature, Vimeo does that job well and has said so in writing about ads. Use uncompressed.io when the file itself has to survive the trip.

Is my work used to train AI on either platform?

Vimeo states it will not allow generative AI models to be trained using videos hosted on its platform without your explicit consent, even on its free offerings. On YouTube, the third-party training setting is turned off by default, and turning it on means allowing the selected third-party companies to use your content to train AI models they are building. Here, the Terms carry a clause saying files are never sold and never used to train AI, with a 30-day notice rule on changes.
