A portfolio is judged
on image quality.
A producer watches a reel for about ninety seconds and reads the image the whole time: the roll-off in a blown highlight, the grain structure, how a skin tone holds in shadow. If the host re-encoded your upload, that judgment lands on the host’s compression settings, not on your grade.
There are two quality questions here, and hosts fail the second one silently. The first is the file you export; you control that. The second is what the viewer receives. Most platforms re-encode on ingest: they park your master and stream a version they made, at a bitrate they chose. You never see the downgrade, because you are watching your own memory of the shot instead of the pixels on the client’s screen.
Browser playback depends on codec and profile support, hardware and the connection. There is no universal bitrate that guarantees smooth playback. Use a short H.264 or HEVC export to test the recipient’s setup before sharing an important film.

Self-hosting is the honest sibling in that table: full control, zero branding, and every playback problem becomes yours, from encoding ladders to player bugs to the bandwidth line on the hosting bill. A studio with an engineer on staff can make it excellent. One filmmaker maintaining one reel usually finds the portfolio degrading quietly the month work gets busy.

Do I need my own website for a video portfolio?
No. Every film gets a clean link like uncompressed.io/you/the-film, and the player carries your logo and accent color rather than ours. If you already run a site, embed the same player there; the embed carries no platform branding either.
Will the host re-encode my reel?
uncompressed.io streams the exact bytes you upload, so the only compression in the chain is the one you chose in your export dialog. YouTube and Vimeo re-encode every upload into their own delivery ladders; Vimeo's documented maximum video bitrate at 4K H.264 is 22 Mbps.
What file should I upload for the web version of my reel?
The macOS app supports R3D, BRAW, N-RAW and ProRes on compatible Macs. Playback depends on the codec, hardware, storage and file availability; test a short clip on the recipient’s Mac. For browser review, use a supported H.264, HEVC or AV1 export.
How much does portfolio hosting cost?
The free Starter plan includes 5 GB of storage, one film at a time, and core hosting and review features: the clean player, custom branding, embeds, review tools, all of it. Paid plans differ in storage, included team seats and caption allowances. Lite is $9 a month for 100 GB hot plus 100 GB cold and Pro is $39 a month for 250 GB hot plus 750 GB cold, with unlimited streaming and external viewers; storage allowances and Starter’s one-film limit apply.
What happens when a client watches on a slow connection?
The player buffers, then plays your file at full quality. It never swaps in a low-bitrate proxy, so nobody forms an opinion of your grade from a soft rendition. On a very slow link that trade means a short wait, and for a portfolio we think the wait is the right side of the trade.
