You spent the grade getting a clean roll-off in the highlights and a gentle gradient across the sky. You export a pristine master, upload it, and the version that plays back has visible steps in that gradient and blocky noise in the shadows. Nothing was wrong with your file. The host re-encoded it.

Why almost every host re-encodes your upload

- One-size-fits-all encoder presets. The encoder is tuned for average content at scale, not for a 35-second graded piece where the whole point is a smooth gradient. Its rate-control spends bits on motion and starves the flat areas where banding shows.
None of this is a bug. It's the correct engineering trade-off for a platform whose product is reach. It's just the wrong trade-off when the file is the deliverable.
What compression actually does to graded footage
Compression artifacts cluster exactly where a colorist works. The failure modes are predictable once you know where to look:
- Banding in gradients and skies. A smooth transition from light to dark needs enough bit depth and enough bitrate to describe hundreds of subtle steps. Squeeze either and the encoder collapses them into a handful of visible bands — the classic staircase across a dusk sky or a lit wall.
- Mushy, blocky shadows. Low-light detail is low-contrast, so rate-control deprioritizes it. Shadows turn into flat blocks and the fine noise structure that made them read as film smears into digital sludge.
- Smeared fine detail and chroma. Skin texture, hair, foliage, and saturated color edges lose definition. Chroma subsampling and aggressive bitrate caps hit exactly the work you did on skin tones and color separation.
For a wedding highlight or a spec spot this can be the difference between "looks like the grade" and "looks like a YouTube rip of the grade." When the video is your portfolio, that gap is your reputation.
How to tell if your host is compressing you
You don't need a lab. A few practical checks will expose almost any host:
- Compare file sizes. Download the streamed version (or check the manifest) and compare its bitrate to your master. If your 80 Mbps export streams back at a small fraction of that, it was re-encoded. A host that preserves your file serves the same bitrate you uploaded.
- Upload a torture-test clip. A slow gradient, a near-black shadow ramp, and some fine noise. Banding, blocking, or smearing that wasn't in your export is compression you can see.

Bitrate, codecs, and bit depth — the three levers
To judge a host, it helps to know the three things that decide image quality:
- Bitrate is how many bits per second are spent describing the image. More bits mean more detail survives. Meaningful high-bitrate delivery looks like 4K at 100+ Mbps and 8K around 200 Mbps — enough headroom that flat areas don't band and shadows don't block up.

One thing worth saying plainly: streaming codecs are not the same as the formats you shoot on.
