The short answer
The delivery bitrate
decides what survives.
A cinematography reel is fine detail and almost nothing else. Grain structure, the halation around a practical, the way a lens falls apart at the edge of the frame, the separation between two dark greys in a night exterior. Those are the first things a rate-limited encoder gives up, because they are the most expensive things in the picture to describe.
So the hosting question is not really a hosting question. It is a question about the last encode in the chain. You spent the grade deciding how much texture stays in the shadows. If the platform re-encodes your upload and delivers a rendition it chose, the producer is grading that rendition, and you never see it happen, because you are watching your own memory of the shot rather than the pixels on their screen.
The answer that follows from that: host the reel where the file is served as you exported it, and judge every candidate on four things. Does it re-encode. Does it brand the player. Does the page look like yours. Does the link survive a re-cut. Everything else on a hosting comparison page is noise for this particular job.
One caveat that makes this honest rather than absolute: no host can make a browser decode something it cannot decode. Whether a given export plays smoothly is decided by the viewer’s browser, hardware and connection. A host can only promise not to make the file worse before it gets there.
What a ladder actually delivers

Vimeo publishes its rendition ladder and the maximum bitrate of each rung. It is a useful document, because it is the only place a filmmaker can read the ceiling in advance instead of guessing at it.

Read the fine print on that ladder before you read the numbers. The maximum is a maximum, and complexity pushes the actual encode below it. A dialogue two-shot on a clean wall is not complex. A handheld night exterior with 35mm grain and rain in the backlight is about as complex as moving pictures get, which means the reel that most needs the bits is the one most likely to be given fewer of them.
The ladder also stops where it stops. Vimeo generates a 5K to 8K transcode only when the creator uploaded an HDR file above 5K resolution, and it restricts above-4K playback to specific desktop browsers with supporting hardware, with no support on mobile. For a reel that is mostly a footnote, since almost nobody delivers a reel above 4K, but it is worth knowing the ladder is not open-ended.
Where the bits go missing
Four things

These are the four attributes people actually mean when they say a reel looks expensive, and all four are bitrate-hungry.
Grain and film texture
Grain is close to random, so it cannot be predicted from the frame before it and it cannot be cheaply described. Under a tight budget it either smears into a waxy plastic surface or breaks into blocky noise. Both readings say the same thing to a producer: video, not film.
Halation and highlight roll-off
The bloom around a practical is a wide, low-contrast gradient. Gradients are the first place quantisation shows, and the halo you built in the grade turns into a ring of visible steps or gets flattened away entirely.
Lens character
Field curvature, edge softness, the specific way a vintage lens renders an out-of-focus highlight. All of it lives in low-contrast detail that a bit-starved encode treats as negligible, which is precisely why you chose that glass.
Shadow separation
The difference between a shadow with information in it and a shadow that is just black is a handful of code values. Coarse quantisation spends the fewest bits down there, so the separation you protected in the grade collapses into a single flat tone.
10-bit master
1,024 shades per channel. The night sky falls off smoothly, the way the camera saw it.
Crushed to 8-bit, then starved
256 shades, and aggressive quantization spends even fewer on dark areas. The falloff turns into visible bands.

The checklist
Four questions to ask
before you upload anything.
Ask them in this order. The first one eliminates most candidates on its own.
Does it re-encode?
Find the vendor’s own words, not a review. YouTube states plainly that it always re-encodes uploads. Vimeo publishes a ladder with per-rung maximum bitrates. uncompressed.io has no encode step at all, at upload or at playback: the bytes stored are the bytes served.
Does it brand the player?
A logo that is not yours in the corner of your reel is a small tax you pay on every viewing. Check whether removing it costs money, and whether putting your own logo there costs more.
Does the page look like yours?
A reel usually arrives as one link, and that link is the whole first impression. Ask what the page around the player says about who made the film, and whether you control the order and weight of the work on it.
Does the link survive a re-cut?
Reels change constantly. If a new cut means a new URL, every résumé, festival form and email signature carrying the old one quietly goes stale. Ask whether you can swap the file underneath the same address.

YouTube is still the right answer when the goal is discovery and reach. Nothing else puts your work in front of people who were not already looking for you, and a public upload is indexed, recommended and shareable in a way no private host can match. What you give up is documented rather than rumoured: YouTube says it always re-encodes, its Terms grant it the right to display ads on or within Content, its Help pages say ads may appear on videos you never monetised and on channels outside the Partner Program, and its player documentation says related videos cannot be switched off. Treat the YouTube copy as the trailer. Do not treat it as the master.
Vimeo remains a strong, well-understood default that a hiring producer will never question. It is the address the industry expects, showcases are a real portfolio tool, and Standard and above can customise a showcase’s domain, which is something we do not offer at all. The trade is the ladder: a published 22 Mbps maximum at 4K, and Vimeo’s own note that complex images may transcode lower. There is also a bandwidth threshold of 2 TB a month, with a seven-day window to resolve an overage and a stated risk of temporary suspension, though Vimeo publishes exemptions for creative professionals and for small nonprofits, so a working DP’s reel is unlikely to be the account that trips it.
Self-hosting is the honest maximalist choice. Total control, no branding, no policy that can change under you. Also every playback problem, every encoding decision and every bandwidth invoice becomes yours. A studio with an engineer can make it excellent. One cinematographer maintaining one reel usually discovers the portfolio has been broken for a month during the month they were busy shooting.

The practical arrangement

Most working cinematographers end up running two copies, and that is not a compromise so much as the correct answer to two different jobs. The public copy goes wherever the audience already is, and its job is to be found. The real reel, the one on the résumé, the festival form and the cold email to a producer, goes on a host that serves the file you graded, at an address that says your name.

What happens to the link when I re-cut the reel?
Replace the file on the same film. The identifier, the slug, the page and every embed you already sent stay exactly as they were, so a producer’s bookmark from March opens tonight’s cut. Poster frames are captured automatically at two seconds or the midpoint, and you can replace the poster yourself.
What should I export for the web version of the reel?
A browser-decodable export in MP4 or MOV: H.264, HEVC or AV1. We apply no codec allowlist and no bitrate or resolution ceiling, so what plays is decided by the viewer’s browser and hardware rather than by a cap on our side. The only published limit is 50 GB per file. ProRes and camera RAW are hosted for download rather than browser playback.
Is the player different on the free plan?
No. There is no tier check in the player. No platform logo, no ads, no related videos and no end screen, on the free plan exactly as on the paid ones, and the only logo it can display is one you upload yourself. The free plan holds 5 GB of storage and one film at a time.
