Video hosting comparison
Vimeo vs Wistia vs Uncompressed: which video host fits your work?
Start with the job: showing finished films, collecting client decisions, or turning website viewers into marketing leads.
Updated 15 September 2026
For a filmmaker who wants to preserve a chosen export and deliver client work, test Uncompressed. For an established video-hosting workflow with adaptive playback, consider Vimeo. For a marketing operation built around video engagement, forms and CRM workflows, evaluate Wistia. The best choice depends on the capabilities you use, not the length of a feature list.

Choose by the work your video needs to do
| Your main need | Start by evaluating | Deciding check |
|---|---|---|
| A filmmaker’s portfolio and original-export delivery | Uncompressed | Does your export play smoothly on your audience’s devices? |
| An established website video library | Vimeo | Do its playback, embed and existing team workflows meet your needs? |
| Marketing forms, engagement and connected lead workflows | Wistia | Which marketing capabilities and integrations are included in the plan? |
| Client cut review plus final-file delivery | Uncompressed and Frame.io | Test one full revision cycle with your editor and client. |
Playback: an unchanged export has requirements
UC’s ordinary original-file player serves your uploaded export without another platform re-encode. That preserves the file you chose; it does not fix source defects or guarantee smooth playback on every connection. The browser must support the codec, and the connection must sustain the file’s bitrate.
Vimeo and Wistia create playback renditions. That can help reach viewers with different devices and connection speeds. Compare the actual delivered picture and startup behavior using the same short film. A larger file is not automatically a better experience.

Compare the bill and the storage state
UC Lite is USD 9/month or USD 90/year for 100 GB hot plus 100 GB cold. Extra seats cost USD 15/month. Hot and cold blocks cost USD 40 and USD 20 per TB per month. Cold files must be restored before website playback or review.
Vimeo’s current plan guide lists 2 TB on Starter, 4 TB on Standard and 7 TB on Advanced. Wistia Business advertises 250 GB and three users; its displayed USD 79/month is an annual-billing rate. Storage alone does not capture the value of marketing or production features.
Compare the same currency, commitment, paid team size, playable capacity and expected traffic. A cheaper headline price with less active storage is not an equivalent offer. See UC monthly and annual cost examples.
Keep Wistia when the marketing workflow is the reason you pay
If your team uses connected marketing data, lead scoring or campaign reporting, establish the replacement for each capability before changing hosts. Wistia lists forms and advanced analytics on Business, with an Automation Suite on Business + Lead gen. UC’s client-review and viewing features are not a claim of parity with that system.
You can keep marketing videos on Wistia and use UC for film portfolios and client delivery. That is useful when the two libraries do different jobs. Evaluate UC for hosting-focused work.
Run a one-film pilot before a full migration
- Keep your original export and inventory its links, captions and permissions.
- Test playback and the actual website embed on desktop and mobile, signed out.
- Ask a teammate to try the review instructions, version selection and final download.
- Verify which originals, metadata and historical analytics can be exported. A video file transfer does not transfer every service feature.
- Replace the links you control before ending the old subscription. UC cannot redirect an old Vimeo or Wistia URL.

Frequently asked
Which should I choose for a company website?
Choose around the site's purpose. A film portfolio needs reliable presentation; a marketing site may need forms, attribution and CRM integration. Test one real embed and list the required capabilities before choosing.
Can Uncompressed replace Vimeo, Frame.io and Wistia completely?
No single replacement is established for every workflow. UC combines film hosting, client review and final delivery, but a team may still need Frame.io production tools, Vimeo workflows or Wistia marketing capabilities.
Can I host a portfolio for free?
UC Free includes 5 GB and one film at a time, without a credit card. Use a compatible export and test it on your website. Move to a paid plan when you need several films at once.
Can I use UC cold storage for website embeds?
An archived film must be restored before streaming, embedding or review. Keep the films that your website visitors need in hot storage, with enough spare capacity for planned restores.
Does this comparison cover live webinars and A/B testing?
It does not establish UC support equivalent to specialist webinar, experimentation or marketing-attribution tools. Verify those requirements separately; hosting an on-demand film is a different job.
Can I keep more than one video platform?
Yes. A marketing library and a client-delivery library can have different needs. Account for the combined subscriptions and maintain a clear record of where each original, embed and approval lives.
