Does a private Vimeo link affect festival premiere status?
No festival page we checked says. Ask each one in writing.
Nobody can promise you that a private link keeps premiere status, and no official festival page we read on 17 September 2026 addresses private or password-protected screeners at all. Every rule we could verify tests whether the film was available to the public or online. Whether a gated link counts is the festival's call, so get its answer in writing before you send one.

The test is public availability,
and the rules do not settle it.
The rules we could verify ask whether a film was shown to the public, or put online. None of them says whether a link behind a password, or an unlisted link you sent to a few people, counts. That silence is not permission.

Hot Docs and SXSW both expect a streamable screener link sent to them.
The wording that does exist is broad. Sundance’s page for the 2027 festival rules out features shown in theatres or otherwise made available to the general public, either for free or for purchase, and names any streaming or online platform in any country. Cannes’ 2026 regulations for short films in competition say a short must not have been screened on the Internet, with no qualifier about passwords. Hot Docs asks that 2027 features not be available online in any form accessible to Ontario, Canada audiences.
Read those plainly and a gated link is not obviously outside them. It is not obviously inside them either. The only people who can settle it are the festival’s own programmers, which is why the answer to the question in the title is: ask, and keep the reply.

then send the screener.
Ask the festival directly
Email the submissions office with the exact situation: where the film is hosted, whether it is password-protected or unlisted, who has the link and since when. Keep the reply with the film's paperwork.
Keep it off public surfaces
Until you have that answer, do not list the film on a public page, a public profile or anything a search engine can index. Treat every place the film can be found without a link as a possible public release.
One gated link per request
Send a festival the link it asked for, and nobody else the same one. A link that travels through inboxes is harder to describe to a programmer who asks who has seen the film.
Keep it working as promised
Hot Docs says the screener password must not change during programming and wants links streamable until April 2027. SXSW wants them accessible through March 2027. Put those dates in your calendar.
On uncompressed.io each film is Private, Password, Unlisted, Public or Embed only, on every plan. Only Public films appear on your profile page; an Unlisted film opens only for someone holding its link; a Password film shows a gate that is checked on the server. Changing the password signs out everyone who had already unlocked the film, which is exactly what a festival asking for an unchanged password does not want, so leave it alone until programming ends. A password-protected film does not play inside an embed. Anyone you give the code to can pass it on.
One practical trap for a screener that must stay live for months: free accounts are cleared after 90 days with no sign-in and no views, with an email warning first. Is an unlisted link the same as making the film public?
No festival page we read says either way. SXSW's 2027 feature application lists unlisted YouTube among its examples of a screener link to send the festival, but the same page says nothing about premiere status. A link that works for a submission tells you nothing about how that festival would treat the same film sitting unlisted for months with the link passed around. Ask.
My short was online for a few weeks. Is it out of Hot Docs?
Not out, but its status changes. Hot Docs' 2027 submission page says short films available online will be considered Toronto premieres, while features, mid-length and episodic work must be at least Ontario premieres and must not be available online in a form accessible to Ontario, Canada audiences.
Are there festivals that do not care about premiere status?
Yes. Clermont-Ferrand's 2027 submission page says the festival does not require exclusivity or premiere status. It also accepts no viewing links for preselection: films are uploaded as files through Shortfilmdepot, so a screener link is not the question there at all.
What about festivals not on this page?
Two other major festival sites could not be read when this page was checked, so nothing is said about them. The method is the same for any festival: find the eligibility section of its own current regulations, note the edition year, and email the submissions office with the exact question.
Keep the film gated while you ask
Private, Password, Unlisted, Public and Embed only are set per film, on every plan including the free one. Only Public films appear on your profile page. None of these settings is a festival ruling; the festival decides.
