The Z9 records six file types, and for review they split three ways: some play in the macOS app, some play in a browser, one plays in neither. None of them is the file to send a client for sign-off. Here is what each one does and what to export instead.

What the Z9 records

Six file types that split
three ways for review.

Nikon’s manual lists six video file types for the Z9. They differ in bit depth, chroma, frame size and data rate by more than an order of magnitude, and that decides where each one can be played.

Audio follows the container: Linear PCM at 48 kHz, 24-bit in the .NEV and .MOV files, AAC at 48 kHz, 16-bit in the MP4. N-RAW has two quality settings, High quality and Normal; at 8.3K, Normal runs about 3,470 Mbps at 60p and 1,740 Mbps at 30p, against 5,780 and 3,470 Mbps for High quality.

Browser codecs: H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265 including 10-bit 4:2:2 where the viewer's device decodes it, and AV1, in MP4 or MOV. No RAW format and no ProRes plays in a web browser through uncompressed.io.

The macOS app plays N-RAW and ProRes up to 8K 4:2:2 HQ at 60 fps; the Z9’s ProRes 422 HQ tops out at 3840 x 2160 60p, well inside that. It does not play ProRes RAW, so a Z9 shot in ProRes RAW HQ has no native review path through us. Supported camera originals and Vault playback use the compatible macOS app; they are not universally playable in web browsers. Playback is hardware-dependent, so test a short clip on the recipient’s Mac before the session.

Even the files a browser can open are the wrong thing to send for sign-off. Anything shot in N-Log looks flat until it is graded. The H.265 10-bit file is 4:2:2, which plays only where the viewer’s device decodes it; the HEVC 10-bit 4:2:2 guide covers which devices that is. The H.264 proxy recorded with both RAW types plays everywhere, but it is an ungraded 8-bit 1920 x 1080 file: fine for checking that a take exists, not for approving a picture. And every camera file is uncut. The client should review the edit.

The grading master

What you record
decides the review path.

For latitude in the grade, record one of the 12-bit RAW types. N-RAW at High quality runs about 5,780 Mbps at 8.3K 60p, against about 400 Mbps for H.265 10-bit at 8K 30p. Between the two RAW types, the review question settles it. N-RAW records the full 8256 x 4644 frame and plays in the macOS app; ProRes RAW HQ does neither. ProRes 422 HQ is the lighter 10-bit All-I choice when 4K is the delivery and the client may want to see originals in the app. N-Log is available on N-RAW, ProRes RAW HQ, ProRes 422 HQ and H.265 10-bit. The review export

Export H.265 Main10 (10-bit) in MP4 or MOV, constant frame rate, 2-pass VBR, AAC audio at 320 kbps. Browser playback uses your uploaded export without another platform re-encode, so these values are what the client sees. Codec, device and connection requirements still apply.

If you need one number: 80 Mbps HEVC 10-bit covers 1080p through 4K. Calm frames such as interviews hold at 40 to 50 Mbps; snow, rain, water, foliage, heavy grain and fast pans want 100 to 120 Mbps.

Three Z9-specific points. First, grade or apply Nikon’s N-Log 3D LUT (from the Nikon Download Center) before export: a browser shows the file as encoded, so an untransformed N-Log file looks washed out. Second, match the export frame rate to the timeline, not the card. The Z9’s 24p is 23.976 fps and its 60p is 59.94, so a 23.976 timeline exports at 23.976, and 120p material shot for slow motion exports at the timeline rate. Third, 8K review is a decoder question before it is a bitrate question; the 8K hosting guide explains why 4K is usually the right review size. Each film plays from one file with no lower-quality rendition, so a slow connection buffers rather than dropping resolution. Send the link. It is the access; the client needs no account. A password is optional, per video.

Pull notes back

Timecoded comments and drawings return as markers via the Resolve script, Premiere panel or Final Cut bundle.

Each comment carries its author and timecode with a red (to do) or green (applied) status, and approvals are red or green per version. When you replace the file with a new cut, the link, notes and approvals stay. Downloads of the original stay off until you switch them on for that video.

When this is the wrong tool

If the client only needs a quick look on a phone and you already share through another platform, stay there; a phone check does not need a 10-bit master. If you shot ProRes RAW HQ and the client wants to see originals, we cannot play those anywhere, so export. A whole shoot of N-RAW at about 2.6 TB an hour (8.3K 60p, High quality) rides better on a drive than through anyone’s uplink. And no browser plays RAW: a client on Windows or a phone reviews the HEVC export, not the .NEV.

Frequently asked

Can a client watch Nikon Z9 N-RAW in a web browser?

No. Nikon's manual says RAW video can only be viewed and edited in computer software that supports the RAW video format, and no RAW format plays in a web browser through uncompressed.io. The uploaded .NEV file plays natively in the compatible macOS app. Supported camera originals and Vault playback use the compatible macOS app; they are not universally playable in web browsers. For a browser client, send a graded HEVC or H.264 export.

Why does my Z9 footage look flat on the review link?

Because it was shot in N-Log and exported without a grade or a transform. A browser shows the file as encoded, so log footage looks washed out. Apply your grade, or Nikon's N-Log 3D LUT from the Nikon Download Center, before you export. Nikon notes that compatible third-party software is required for colour grading.

Is the H.264 proxy the Z9 records with N-RAW good enough for review?

For a content check, yes: it is an H.264 8-bit MP4 at 1920 x 1080, which browsers play. For sign-off, no. It is an ungraded 8-bit proxy, so it shows what was shot, not how the finished picture will look.

Should I export Z9 8K footage at 8K for client review?

Usually not. A 4K HEVC 10-bit export at 40 to 80 Mbps (24/30p) or 50 to 100 Mbps (60p) covers most reviews. If the client must judge 8K, export HEVC at up to about 120 Mbps and test a short clip on their device first, because 8K decode depends on the viewer's hardware.

N-RAW or ProRes RAW HQ, if the client will review camera originals?

N-RAW. The .NEV file plays natively in the macOS app on a compatible Mac; ProRes RAW plays neither in the app nor in a browser. N-RAW also records the full 8256 x 4644 frame, which Nikon lists as unavailable for ProRes RAW HQ.
