The V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV records R3D up to 8K and ProRes up to 4K. Here is which of those files a client can play, the HEVC export for a browser review link, and when to send the R3D itself.

What the camera records
The V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV
R3D to 8K, ProRes to 4K.
RED lists a 35.4 megapixel global shutter sensor, 40.96 mm x 21.60 mm, with an effective 8192 x 4320 and 17+ stops of dynamic range. Everything you share starts from one of the recording options below.

Frame rates and ProRes options from RED's V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV technical specifications; REDCODE data rates from the R3D Quality page of the same operation guide (docs.red.com, read 19 September 2026). Mbps computed at 8 bits per byte. Audio is 24-bit 48 kHz; colour science is IPP2 with 3D LUT and CDL support.
For the grading master, R3D is the choice: RAW, recorded at the full 8K sensor width, with the grade still open. Of the four quality settings, HQ keeps the most data per frame and MQ is the camera default. LQ and ELQ are what unlock 8K above 60 fps. Internal ProRes stops at 4K, so it is a finished-looking file rather than a full-resolution negative.
Who can play what
Browser, macOS app,
and which file plays nowhere.
None of the files this camera writes is a browser file. The browser gets an export; the R3D goes to the macOS app; internal ProRes 4444 has no playback path through us at all.
A web browser
Plays your export: H.264, HEVC including 10-bit 4:2:2 where the viewer's device decodes it, or AV1, in MP4 or MOV. It does not play R3D or any ProRes. Browser playback uses your uploaded export without another platform re-encode; codec, device and connection requirements still apply.
The macOS app
Plays the R3D natively on a compatible Mac, and internal ProRes 422 HQ, 422 and 422 LT, which sit inside the app's ProRes ceiling of 4:2:2 HQ at 60 fps (4K clips above 60 fps are beyond it). Playback is hardware-dependent, so test a short clip on the recipient's Mac first.
Neither
ProRes 4444 and 4444 XQ are above the app's stated ceiling and never play in a browser. If you recorded 4444, send an HEVC review export, or the R3D if you shot one alongside.
Supported camera originals and Vault playback use the compatible macOS app; they are not universally playable in web browsers. That gives the page its two paths: an HEVC review export for producers, agencies and anyone on a phone or a PC, and the R3D itself for a colorist or director who sits at a compatible Mac and needs to judge the negative. The review export
HEVC 10-bit,
sized to what you shot.
Export H.265 Main10, MP4 or MOV, constant frame rate, 2-pass VBR, AAC audio at 320 kbps. Pick the bitrate from the resolution you deliver, not the resolution you recorded.
Recommended targets from uncompressed.io's export guidance. One starting number: 80 Mbps HEVC 10-bit covers 1080p through 4K; calm frames such as interviews need 40 to 50, busy frames (rain, water, foliage, heavy grain, fast pans) 100 to 120.
Resolution. An 8K export is possible, but many viewers’ devices will not decode 8K smoothly, and a single file with no lower rendition buffers instead of dropping resolution. For most reviews, downscale the 8K or 6K timeline to a 4K export. The 8K hosting guide and can a browser play 6K explain where the limits sit.
Frame rate. The camera reaches 120 fps at 8K 17:9 and 240 fps at 4K 17:9, but the review file follows the timeline. Export high-speed material at the rate it plays in the edit, at a constant frame rate.
Colour. A browser shows the file as encoded. R3D is graded through IPP2, which supports 3D LUTs and CDLs; apply the grade, or at least a transform to Rec.709, before export, or the client judges an undeveloped image.
Why the bitrate matters. Vimeo documents a maximum of 22 Mbps for 4K H.264 and 16 Mbps for 4K HDR or HEVC. A 4K export at 40 to 80 Mbps keeps more of the texture an 8K sensor recorded. Ready-made presets for DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Media Encoder and Compressor are on the NLE page.

Four steps. The export and the R3D can share one project and go out on separate links.
Offload and grade
Copy the R3D and any ProRes off the CFexpress card. Grade, or apply a Rec.709 transform, on the timeline you will review.
Export the review file
HEVC 10-bit, 4K for most jobs, constant frame rate, 2-pass VBR, AAC 320 kbps. Use the free presets rather than building settings by hand.
Upload and share
Uploads are resumable and take files up to 5 TB each. Send the HEVC link to browser clients; add the R3D for a colorist on a compatible Mac. The link is the access, with an optional password; clients need no account.
Pull notes back
Comments carry author and timecode with red or green status, plus drawings on the picture. They return as markers through a Resolve script, a Premiere Pro panel or a Final Cut Pro bundle.
Replacing the file with a new cut keeps the link, views, notes and approvals. Downloads of the original stay off until you switch them on for that video, so uploading an R3D for viewing does not hand over the file.

Frequently asked
Can my client play V-RAPTOR [X] R3D files in a web browser?
No. No RAW format plays in a web browser through uncompressed.io. For a browser review link, export an H.264, HEVC or AV1 file. The R3D plays in the macOS app on a compatible Mac; supported camera originals and Vault playback use the compatible macOS app; they are not universally playable in web browsers.
I recorded ProRes 4444 XQ internally. Can I share that file?
You can upload it, since there is no codec allowlist, but neither a browser nor the macOS app will play it: the app's stated ProRes ceiling is 4:2:2 HQ. Export an HEVC review file for the client, or send the R3D if you recorded one and the viewer has a compatible Mac.
Should I export the review file in 8K?
Usually not. An 8K HEVC export is possible, and the recommended target tops out at about 120 Mbps for 6K to 8K, but many viewers' devices will not decode 8K smoothly. A 4K HEVC 10-bit export at 40 to 80 Mbps (24 or 30 fps) is the practical review file. Send 8K only when the client is judging resolution itself and you have tested their device.
How much storage does 8K R3D take?
RED lists 8K 17:9 at 24P at 425 MB/s in HQ and 298 MB/s in MQ. At 425 MB/s, one hour is about 1.5 TB (our arithmetic: 425 MB/s x 3,600 seconds). Files upload up to 5 TB each, resumably. For an R3D review set, Max is $99 a month with 1 TB hot and 2 TB cold, and extra hot storage is $40 per TB a month.
One review file, one R3D, one link
Upload the HEVC export for browser clients and the R3D for the colorist on a Mac. Streaming has no per-view or bandwidth charge; plans differ by storage and seats.
