Is Vimeo shutting down?
No. One Vimeo product ends on 20 November 2026.

Vimeo has not announced that it is closing, and in March 2026 it published its priorities for the year. What is ending is Vimeo On Demand, its storefront for selling and renting video, on a four-date schedule. Here is what ends, what is only uncertain, and the one thing worth doing either way: keep your own copy of your files while your plan is paid.

The short answer

Vimeo is not closing;
one product inside it is.

As of 16 September 2026, Vimeo has published no plan to close. The shutdown notice on its site covers one product, Vimeo On Demand, the storefront creators used to sell and rent video. Hosting, embedding, review links and the rest of the platform are not part of that notice.

The clearest statement of intent is Vimeo’s own post from 18 March 2026, “A Look Ahead At Vimeo in 2026 & Beyond”. It lists three priorities for the year: streamline the core Vimeo experience, improve overall platform reliability, and carry out separate roadmaps for Vimeo Enterprise and for Streaming (OTT). Those are the plans of a company that intends to keep operating the product.

The company is also still shipping. On 14 May 2026 Vimeo published a post counting more than 50 improvements in four months, and its blog feed shows new posts as recent as 10 September 2026. If you use Vimeo to host and embed video, nothing announced today requires you to leave.

All four dates are in 2026. Vimeo’s seller FAQ says the underlying videos stay in the seller’s Vimeo account under that plan’s storage terms, and that content and subscriber data will not be moved automatically to Vimeo OTT, which it recommends as the alternative for selling video. Buyers who want to keep a title should download it before 20 November, which works only where the seller enabled downloads. An owner change is a fair reason to check your setup, not a reason to panic. Vimeo’s March post describes Bending Spoons as a company that acquires “iconic products” and sets out what it wants to improve. Anything beyond that, such as future plan changes, is speculation, and this page does not guess.

What to do either way

Take a copy of your files
while your plan is paid.

Whether or not anything else changes at Vimeo, the rules for keeping your own files are already written down, and they all point to doing it before a plan ends, not after.

Check the source-file setting

Vimeo keeps your original upload only on a paid plan, and only if Keep source video files is switched on. Turning it on does not bring back files already removed.

Download while paid

If a plan lapses to Free, videos above the 1 GB Free cap are restricted, newest first, and cannot be played, edited or downloaded. Stored source files may be deleted when a subscription ends.

Plan for one at a time

Vimeo states that bulk downloading is not supported. List your videos first, starting with the ones you cannot re-export.

Keep two copies

One on your own drives, one somewhere else. An importer can do the second copy for you without touching the Vimeo account.

Read-only connection

The importer connects to your Vimeo account with read access only. It never posts, edits or deletes anything on Vimeo. Links, comments and analytics stay where they are.

Labels before you import

Each file is labelled as the source file, a Vimeo re-encoded version, or an available file whose source is unconfirmed, so you know what you are copying. If Vimeo exposes no downloadable file, the import is refused.

Server to server

Files move from Vimeo to your storage here directly, not through your computer. The file is not re-encoded by us, and it plays as uploaded, subject to the viewer's device.

Storage decides the size

Imports count against your plan. Free holds 5 GB, one film at a time. Lite is $9 a month with 100 GB to stream and 100 GB of archive; larger plans are on the pricing page.

When to stay with Vimeo

If Vimeo hosts your marketing videos, your live events or your team’s review links, and it works, there is no announced reason to move. A backup is cheap insurance, not a migration. If you sold films through On Demand, Vimeo’s own recommended path is Vimeo OTT, and the decision there is about selling video, which is a different question from where you keep your masters. Who owns Vimeo now?

Bending Spoons. Vimeo announced a definitive agreement to be acquired on 10 September 2025, for $1.38 billion, or $7.85 per share in cash, with closing expected in the fourth quarter of 2025. Vimeo's March 2026 blog post refers to the acquisition as having happened in November 2025. What the new owner will change beyond the published priorities has not been announced.

What happens to my videos if my paid Vimeo plan ends?

Vimeo's help center says an account that lapses to Free is held to the 1 GB Free cap, with the most recent uploads restricted first, and restricted videos cannot be played, edited or downloaded. Separately, stored source files may be deleted and may not be recoverable once a subscription ends. That is why the time to take a copy is while the plan is still paid.

Can I download my whole Vimeo library in one go?

Not from Vimeo's own interface. Its help center states that bulk downloading is not supported, so a manual backup is one video at a time. An importer that connects to your account, like the one on uncompressed.io, can copy many files for you, subject to what Vimeo exposes for download and the storage on your plan.

I bought or rented a film on Vimeo On Demand. What should I do?
