WeTransfer vs MASV for large video files.
Two different meters, and a third shape neither one is.

WeTransfer’s allowances are published per tier. Free sends up to 10 transfers, or 3 GB total, in any 30-day rolling window. Starter sends up to 10 transfers, or 300 GB total, in the same window. Ultimate is unlimited transfers up to 1 TB per transfer, with custom expiration, password protection, branded pages and Access Control. Teams adds shared workspaces, team brand controls and admin tools. Enterprise is negotiated.

MASV has no window at all. It charges $0.25 per GB, gives you 15 GB free every month, and states there is no contract and no minimum. It supports multi-terabyte files, and after sign-up there is no limit to the number of files and folders you can send. The bill grows with the work and shrinks with it.

MASV is genuinely excellent at the job it was built for, and this page will not pretend otherwise. If your task is getting 800 GB of camera original from a location to a post house as fast as the connection allows, MASV is the right purchase and nothing on this site replaces it. What MASV is not is a place a film lives. The free storage window has a 5-day minimum, storage past the included window is billed at $0.07 per GB per month, and the default maximum number of downloads per delivery link is 3.

The arithmetic below is the whole argument, and it works in MASV’s favour as often as not. A month where you move a few finished cuts is cheap. A month where a feature is ingested, conformed and re-delivered three times is not, because every re-delivery is the same gigabytes again. The meter does not know that it is the same film.

Run your own last three months through it before you decide anything. If you are under 100 GB of movement in a normal month, pay as you go is close to free and no subscription can beat it. The per-gigabyte worked example takes one realistic month of client delivery apart line by line.

WeTransfer earns its place by being the lowest-friction way to hand a batch of files to somebody who has no account and no patience. A link, a browser, done in a minute. If you send a couple of files a month to a client who will download once, WeTransfer is the right tool and there is no reason to move.

The shape to understand is the rolling window. Free is 10 transfers or 3 GB in any 30-day rolling period, and Starter is 10 transfers or 300 GB in the same period. That is a cap on the month rather than on the file, so a single large delivery can consume a Starter month on its own. Only Ultimate publishes a per-transfer size, at up to 1 TB per transfer.

Retention is the second thing to plan around. Free and Starter uploads can be kept online for up to 3 days, counted from the exact moment the transfer is sent rather than from when the recipient opens the email. Ultimate subscribers can keep transfers active for as long as they would like. Files shared through a branded page stay accessible for 30 days. An expired transfer can be recovered only if the recovery option was enabled when the transfer was created. And if a paid subscription is cancelled, active transfers are deleted 28 days after cancellation and cannot be recovered.

Storage sits underneath all of that at up to 2 TB by default, with Teams up to 5 TB and extendable to 30 TB on request. Enterprise storage is agreed at contract level.

The honest edges belong here and not in a footnote. Browsers decide what plays: H.264, HEVC and AV1 stream, and 8K plays when the viewer’s own hardware decodes it, which is a statement about their machine rather than a promise about ours. Mastering codecs are hosted for download, not streamed. The macOS app plays R3D, BRAW and N-RAW natively under support agreements with RED, Blackmagic Design and Nikon; none of those three streams and none of them plays in a browser. For camera formats outside those agreements the workflow every facility already runs is still the right one: finish to HEVC or ProRes, then upload.

Plans are flat. Starter is free with 5 GB hot and one film at a time. Lite is $9 a month or $90 a year for 100 GB hot. Pro is $25 or $250 for 500 GB. Max is $75 or $750 for 1.5 TB hot plus 1 TB cold with 3 seats. Studio is $250 or $2,500 for 2 TB hot plus 2 TB cold with 5 seats. Extra seats are $25 a month or $300 a year on every paid plan.
