Answer
What is the best video hosting for filmmakers?
Name the job first. Seven tools, five jobs.
There is no single best host, because filmmakers hire video hosting for five different jobs. For an audience, YouTube. For review notes during the edit, Frame.io, or Dropbox Replay if you already work in Dropbox. For marketing video on a business site, Wistia or SproutVideo. For a portfolio, Vimeo remains a reasonable default. For a portfolio or client link where the viewer must see your uploaded export with no platform re-encode, no ads and no platform branding, uncompressed.io. Every competitor figure below is sourced and dated.
Video hosting for filmmakers · 5 GB free · Paid plans from USD 9/month

The short answer
Filmmakers hire a host for five jobs,
so the answer depends on which job.
A portfolio, a client delivery link, a review round, a marketing video and a public audience ask for different things. A tool built for one is usually average at the others. Start with the job that hurts.
Audience: YouTube
If the goal is that people who have never heard of you find the film, nothing else on this list does that job. Files can be up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less, and uploads over 15 minutes need a verified account.
Review during the edit: Frame.io or Dropbox Replay
Frame.io is the review specialist, with a free plan and clients who comment through share links without an account. Replay makes sense if the team already pays for Dropbox Plus or higher, because it is sold as an add-on.
Marketing video: Wistia or SproutVideo
Both are built for video on a business website. Wistia has a free plan and a paid option to remove its branding; SproutVideo offers white-label hosting on every plan and publishes its bandwidth allowances and overage rates.
Portfolio: Vimeo, or uncompressed.io
Vimeo is the long-standing home for finished work, with paid privacy options such as Unlisted, Password and Embed only. uncompressed.io is the choice when the reel must play as the export you uploaded, with no platform branding or ads.
Client delivery: uncompressed.io
One link per film that plays the uploaded export, with an original-file download you switch on when you choose, a password if you want one, and no bandwidth bill when the client forwards it. Browser playback uses your uploaded export without another platform re-encode. Codec, device and connection requirements still apply.

Side by side
Seven tools, from their own pages,
read on 17 September 2026.
Prices and caps are as each company printed them. Where a page did not state something, the cell says so rather than guessing.

All competitor figures from the official pages in the sources, fetched 17 September 2026. Vimeo's 2 TB threshold comes from its bandwidth article and its plan comparison (Starter, Standard, Advanced); Creator and Core are separate plans in their own articles, being rolled out gradually, and are not part of that comparison. Dropbox Replay was priced only in Canadian dollars. SproutVideo prints all prices in USD.
Job one: audience
If you need people to find the work,
YouTube is the only real answer.
Discovery is a different job from hosting, and no other tool here competes for it. A single file can be up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. By default an upload can be up to 15 minutes long; verified accounts can go longer.
Privacy is flexible enough for simple sharing. An unlisted video can be seen and shared by anyone with the link, without a Google Account. A private video can be seen only by you and the people you choose. Pick YouTube for trailers, behind-the-scenes, channel work and anything whose value grows with views. Look elsewhere when the page is a client deliverable or a reel a commissioner is judging frame by frame.
Job two: review
If the pain is feedback during the edit,
use a tool built for notes.
Frame.io is the specialist. The Free plan is USD 0 for up to 2 members, 2 GB of storage plus 2 GB of mounted storage, and up to 2 projects, and its help center lists 1080p HD playback on Free. Pro is USD 15 per member a month plus tax, for up to 5 members, with 2 TB included and 2 TB more per added member. Team is USD 25 per member a month for up to 15 members, with 3 TB included. External clients reviewing through Share links do not need an account. One cost to plan for: Frame.io says an internal user restricted to comment-only or view-only is still a paid seat. Pick Frame.io when review is the daily job and your team fits the member counts.
Dropbox Replay is the answer for teams already living in Dropbox. It is an add-on at CA$13 per user a month billed annually, or CA$16 billed monthly, and Basic users must upgrade to Plus or higher before buying it; Basic gets limited features. Files up to 150 GB and up to 12 hours are supported, and Dropbox lists frame-accurate edit notes, version comparison, password-protected review links and watermarking, with integrations for Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects and Pro Tools. Pick it when the Dropbox subscription is already paid.
Vimeo also has a review mode. Since April 2026 its blog says you no longer need an account to open or comment on a review link, every comment carries a timestamp, and reviewers no longer see suggested videos. The post does not say which plans include Review, so check your own account.
uncompressed.io includes a review room on the same link as the film: notes pinned to a time in the film, drawings on the frame, threaded replies, and an approval saved per version under the reviewer’s name. Timecoded notes can be pulled into DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro as markers. It is a good fit when you want review and delivery in one place; a large team whose day is spent in review is still better served by a dedicated tool. See the review room.
Job three: marketing
If the film lives on a business website,
pick a marketing video platform.
Wistia has a free plan with 25 GB of storage, 200 GB of bandwidth, one user and Wistia branding. Business is USD 79 a month billed annually, with 250 GB+ of storage, 1 TB of bandwidth and the option to remove Wistia branding. The plan above it, Business + Signals, is USD 329 a month billed annually. Viewer seats are free, can view and comment, and do not count toward seat limits. Pick Wistia when the video is part of a marketing operation.
SproutVideo has no free plan; every feature can be tried for 30 days. Seed is USD 12 a month billed annually or USD 15 monthly, with 150 GB of storage, 150 GB of bandwidth and USD 0.25 per GB over. Tree, labelled Best Value, is USD 72 a month billed annually or USD 95 monthly, with 1 TB of storage, 12 TB of bandwidth and USD 0.08 per GB over. Bandwidth resets every month on monthly plans and every year on annual plans. White-label hosting is on every plan, viewer login protection starts on Sprout, and dynamic watermarks and signed embeds start on Tree. Pick SproutVideo when you want predictable, published delivery pricing for a business library.
Both are good at jobs uncompressed.io does not try to do. If marketing tools are why you are shopping, stay with them.
Job four: portfolio
Vimeo or uncompressed.io, depending on your plan
and what you need the page to do.
Vimeo publishes two sets of plans, and they should not be read as one lineup. Its plan comparison lists Free, Starter, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise: Free holds 1 GB for the account’s lifetime, and Starter, Standard and Advanced hold 2 TB, 4 TB and 7 TB, with a 2 TB monthly bandwidth line. Separately, Vimeo describes two newer plans that are being rolled out gradually and may not be on your account yet. Creator lists 7 TB of total storage, 50 GB of managed storage for embeddable and non-public videos and 1 TB of monthly bandwidth. Core lists 7 TB total, 300 GB managed, 2 TB of monthly bandwidth, one seat with up to 3 team members added, a brand kit with custom fonts, and embed domain-level privacy.
Two details matter for a portfolio. Public and Private work on every Vimeo plan, while Unlisted, Password and Embed only need a paid plan. And Vimeo describes its 2 TB monthly figure as a threshold: it reaches out after two months over it in twelve, or one month over 10 TB. Pick Vimeo when a plan on your account fits your library and you use its wider feature set. This page states no Vimeo price, because the prices on its upgrade page could not be read on 17 September 2026.
uncompressed.io is built for the reel that is judged on image quality. Browser playback uses your uploaded export without another platform re-encode. Codec, device and connection requirements still apply. The player shows your logo and accent colour, with no platform branding, ads or related videos, on every plan. Each film can be Private, Password, Unlisted, Public or Embed only, and all five modes are on every plan including the free one. The profile page lays films out as Hero, Featured or Standard. The portfolio hosting guide covers the page, and free hosting without ads covers the free plan in detail.
Job five: client delivery
If the client must see the film you finished,
that is the job we built for.
A delivery link is a page a client returns to, forwards to a colleague and downloads from once the invoice is paid. What matters is what happens to the file and what a busy week of views costs you.
The file
Browser playback uses your uploaded export without another platform re-encode. Codec, device and connection requirements still apply. Direct uploads accept up to 5 TB per file, within available account storage. Starter includes 5 GB and one film at a time. Archive transfers have separate limits.
The cost
Unlimited video streaming is included, with no per-view or bandwidth overage charges. Storage and team-seat charges are separate. Starter is free with 5 GB, one film at a time. Lite is USD 9 a month for 100 GB hot plus 100 GB archive, Pro USD 39 for 500 GB plus 500 GB, Max USD 99 for 1 TB plus 2 TB, Studio USD 199 for 1 TB plus 7 TB. A year costs ten months.
The people
Plans include storage, team seats and caption allowances. Extra team seats are billed separately; external reviewers do not need a paid seat. Video streaming has no per-view or bandwidth-overage charge. Seats included: 1 on Lite and Pro, 2 on Max, 5 on Studio. Extra seats are USD 15 a month or USD 180 a year.
The download
Each film has an original-file download switch that is off until you turn it on. When it is on, the watch page offers the uploaded file. Turning it off removes the button; it does not stop a determined viewer from saving what a browser plays.
The access
A per-film password, checked on the server, with attempts rate limited. Changing the password signs everyone out of that film. Switching a film to Private makes the page unavailable to anyone but you.
The honest limits
There is one file per film and no rendition ladder, so a slow connection buffers rather than dropping resolution. Browser links carry no watermark. Pages live at uncompressed.io/username or on your username subdomain; your own domain is not supported.

Questions
Frequently asked
Which host is best if I only need one?
Pick the job that costs you the most today. If nobody finds your work, that is an audience problem and YouTube is the answer. If notes arrive in five email threads, that is a review problem and a review tool fixes it. If a producer watches your reel and the grade looks wrong, that is a delivery problem, and a host that plays the uploaded export without a second encode is the fix. Two tools is a sensible setup: one for the edit, one for the finished film.
How much does Vimeo cost?
This page does not print a Vimeo price. On 17 September 2026 the prices on Vimeo's upgrade page load with a script and could not be read, and the help articles cited here state storage, bandwidth and seats, not prices. Check the upgrade page on your own account.
Do my clients need an account to leave notes?
Not on most of these tools. Frame.io says external clients reviewing through Share links do not need to sign up or log in. Vimeo says since April 2026 you no longer need an account to open or comment on a review link. Wistia viewer seats are free and can comment. On uncompressed.io the share link is the access, and external reviewers never take a paid seat.
What are the limits of the free plan here?
The free plan holds 5 GB and one film at a time, with no time limit. Delete it to upload another. Free accounts are cleared after 90 days of inactivity, with an email warning first. Active paid accounts are exempt from free-account inactivity cleanup, subject to the Terms. Paid plans start at USD 9 a month with 100 GB hot and 100 GB archive storage.
When is uncompressed.io the wrong choice?
When you want strangers to discover the film, when your video sits inside a marketing funnel that relies on a marketing platform's own tools, when you need a watermark on browser links (links here add none), when you want your own domain on the page (only an automatic username subdomain exists), or when your viewers are on slow connections and need a lower-resolution fallback: there is one file per film and no rendition ladder, so a slow connection buffers instead.
Host the finished film as you exported it
Starter is free: 5 GB, one film at a time, no card. Lite is USD 9 a month, Pro USD 39, Max USD 99 and Studio USD 199. Unlimited video streaming is included, with no per-view or bandwidth overage charges. Storage and team-seat charges are separate.
