Admissions, not a client screener
Film school application video links:
what each school asks for.
The film programs checked for this page that set link rules name YouTube or Vimeo, and the strictest ask for a link anyone can open with no password, no download step and the player controls left on, kept live for the whole admissions cycle. One program takes Vimeo only and, if you password the link, tells you which password to use. Here is each school's rule, with its source, and how to set the link up.

The short answer
Set the link up
the opposite of a client screener.
A client screener is locked down: password on, download off. An admissions link is usually the reverse. The committee has to open it without asking you for anything, scrub through it, see how long it runs, and still reach it months later. NYU Tisch Graduate Film puts it plainly: “please be sure no downloads or passwords are required.”
No password, unless the school gives you one
NYU Tisch Graduate Film, ArtCenter and AFI all say the link must not be password protected. Toronto Metropolitan University is different: it takes Vimeo only, and if you use Vimeo's privacy settings it tells you which password to set.
Controls on, nothing to download
NYU Tisch Graduate Film asks applicants not to deactivate viewer controls, because reviewers need to fast-forward, rewind and see the runtime, and not to require a download.
Live for the whole cycle
NYU asks that links stay active through the admissions process, AFI until August 2027, and CalArts for at least one full calendar year.

School by school
The link rules,
as published.
“Not stated” means the page fetched did not say. It does not mean anything goes; the rest of the rules may sit inside the application portal. The source number points to the list at the foot of the page.
Taken from each school's own admissions page, fetched 17 September 2026. AFI's other limits: cinematography moving image 20 minutes, editing 20 minutes per example, producing 10 minutes. TMU says Vimeo's privacy settings need a paid Vimeo subscription and are your choice; if you use them, it names FILM2026 for its Fall 2027 intake. Use whatever its page says for your year.
The split on passwords is real, so do not generalize from one school to the next. NYU Tisch Graduate Film, ArtCenter and AFI reject a password-protected link. AFI’s wording is “Ensure links are NOT password protected”. Toronto Metropolitan University takes a different line: a Vimeo link, pasted into a PDF with three visual work examples, where a password is your choice and, if you set one, must be the one it names. Send each school the link it asks for, even if that means two different settings on the same film.
Setting it up
Five checks before you submit,
on whichever host the school names.
Use the host the school names
Most pages above name YouTube or Vimeo, and TMU names Vimeo only. If the page names hosts, pick one of them. If it names none, ask the admissions office before sending a link from anywhere else.
Match the privacy wording exactly
Public where the school says public (NYU Graduate Film). No password where it says not password protected. A password only where the school names one, as TMU does if you choose to set one.
Leave the player alone
Keep the progress bar, the timeline and the runtime visible, and do not make the reviewer download anything. Add English subtitles to work in another language where the school asks for them.
Freeze the link
Do not rename, delete, re-upload or swap the film after you submit. AFI says links cannot be updated once the application is in, and on most hosts a re-upload gets a new address.
The fifth check: test it signed out
Where uncompressed.io fits
An honest answer,
and where it does not.
Every school page in the table that names a host names YouTube or Vimeo, or asks for a direct upload. For those applications, use what the school names. This product is the wrong tool for that link, and a committee should never have to wonder whether your link is acceptable.
Where it does fit is the reel you send everywhere else: mentors, recommenders, a portfolio website, a school that confirms in writing that any accessible link will do. If you use it for an admissions-style link, set the film up the way the schools above describe:
Visibility: Public or Unlisted
Public puts the film on your profile page and makes it findable. Unlisted opens for anyone with the link and stays off the profile. Neither asks the viewer for anything. Leave Password off unless the recipient gave you a code to use.
Downloads: nothing to switch
The original-file download is off unless you turn it on, so nobody is asked to download anything. Turn it on only if someone asks for the file.
Controls: leave them on
Check that the Progress bar and Allow viewers to skip ahead settings are on. With skip-ahead off, the scrubber is locked, which is exactly what NYU asks you not to do.
A link that reads like the film
The address is built from the title, for example uncompressed.io/yourname/your-film. Set it before you send it: a renamed address does not redirect, so the old one stops working.
Two limits to plan around
First, free accounts are cleared after 90 days with no sign-in and no view, with an email warning first. An admissions cycle can run far longer than that, so sign in now and then, or use a paid plan; active paid accounts are exempt from that cleanup, subject to the Terms. Second, the film streams as the one file you uploaded, with no lower-quality version generated for slow connections, so a very high-bitrate export can buffer for a reviewer on weak internet. Export a sensible viewing copy for the link.

Questions
Frequently asked
Is an unlisted YouTube or Vimeo link good enough?
It depends on the school's wording. NYU Tisch Graduate Film says YouTube or Vimeo links must be public. ArtCenter and AFI say links must not be password protected, and the pages checked here do not say whether unlisted counts. When the page says public, use public; otherwise ask the admissions office.
Can I change or re-upload the film after I submit?
Assume not. AFI Conservatory says film links cannot be updated after an application is submitted and asks that links stay active until August 2027. On most hosts a deleted and re-uploaded video gets a new address, so the link the committee has stops working.
What if my film runs longer than the limit?
Cut or choose a different piece. AFI asks for a directing sample of at most 10 continuous minutes, taken from a longer film if needed, and Concordia says its jury will not watch past 5 minutes. ArtCenter asks for whole films, not a reel cut from them, with a total runtime of no more than 20 minutes.
Does my film need subtitles?
Often. NYU Tisch Graduate Film and AFI ask for English subtitles on work that is not in English. Concordia asks for subtitles on work that is in neither English nor French.
Keep a full-quality reel of your own
Use the host your school names for the application itself. For the reel you send everywhere else, the free plan holds 5 GB and one film at a time with no card, and Lite starts at $9 a month.
