Komodo gives you two things to share: a review export any browser can play, and an R3D or ProRes original that plays in the macOS app on a compatible Mac. Here is what the camera records, and the export sized to what you shot.

Komodo is a Super 35 global shutter camera that records REDCODE RAW at three quality settings and, at 4K and 2K, ProRes. Which of those you chose decides what you can send and where it plays.

Supported camera originals and Vault playback use the compatible macOS app; they are not universally playable in web browsers. Playback of an R3D or ProRes clip is hardware-dependent, so test a short clip on the recipient’s Mac before you send a whole reel. For the grade itself, the R3D is the master. It is the RAW record, it covers every frame size the camera offers, and HQ carries the most data of the three settings at about 280 MB/s. MQ is RED’s default and records about 48 minutes per 512 GB card instead of 30. The spec page lists ProRes at 4K and 2K only, so anything shot at 6K or 5K reaches post as R3D.

The review export

Our recommended review export ranges. One starting number if you want one: 80 Mbps HEVC 10-bit covers 1080p through 4K; calm frames such as interviews sit at 40 to 50, busy frames (rain, foliage, heavy grain, fast pans) at 100 to 120. Whether a given device plays 6K is covered on the 6K answer page linked below.

Two Komodo specifics. First, 2K 120 is usually conformed to the timeline as slow motion, so the export follows the timeline rate, not the capture rate. Second, a browser shows the file as encoded: it does not apply your look. Do the grade, or at least a transform to Rec.709, before export. RED’s spec page lists IPP2, 33x33x33 3D LUTs and CDL for the camera, so a look built as a LUT or CDL can carry into the grade and out through the export.

Browser playback uses your uploaded export without another platform re-encode. Codec, device and connection requirements still apply. Each film plays from one file, with no lower-quality rendition, so a slow connection buffers rather than dropping resolution, and no device is guaranteed identical colour or smooth playback. For comparison, Vimeo’s help center lists a 22 Mbps maximum for 4K H.264, 16 Mbps for 4K HDR/HEVC and 7 Mbps for 1080p 60fps. Free presets for DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Media Encoder and Compressor that set these values are on the NLE page.

Offload the card

Copy the R3D or ProRes clips off the CFast 2.0 card into your project, as you already do.

Grade or transform

Apply the grade, or a transform to Rec.709, so the export carries the look and not a flat log image.

Pick the row that matches the frame size and rate you shot: 4K 60 at 50 to 100 Mbps, 4K 24/30 at 40 to 80.

Upload the export, plus R3D or ProRes selects for a Mac client. Files up to 5 TB each, uploads resume.

Share one link

The link is the access; the client needs no account. Add a password per video if you want one.

Pull notes into the NLE

Comments at the timecode and drawings come back as markers in Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.

Comments carry author and timecode with a red (to do) or green (applied) status, and approvals are red or green per version. When the next cut is ready, replace the file: the link, views, embeds, settings, notes and approvals stay. Original-file downloads stay off until you switch them on for that video.

When this is the wrong tool

A client who only needs a quick look on a phone is fine on the platform you already use, at its bitrate. A whole shoot’s worth of 512 GB cards headed to a colorist rides better on a drive than through anyone’s uplink. And a Windows or phone client cannot play the R3D or the ProRes clip at all: send them the HEVC export, not the original.

Frequently asked

Why can't I get 6K at 60 fps out of my Komodo?

Because the camera does not record it. RED's spec page lists 6K 17:9 at up to 40 fps, 6K 2.4:1 at 50, 5K 17:9 at 48, 4K 17:9 at 60 and 2K 17:9 at 120. High frame rate work on Komodo comes from 4K or 2K, so size the review export to the frame size and rate you actually shot.

What bitrate should a Komodo 4K 60 review export use?

HEVC 10-bit at 50 to 100 Mbps, constant frame rate, 2-pass VBR. We do not recommend H.264 for 4K 60. For 4K at 24 or 30 fps, HEVC at 40 to 80 Mbps or H.264 at 50 to 100 Mbps.

Should a Mac client get the R3D or a ProRes 422 HQ clip?

Both play in the macOS app on a compatible Mac: R3D natively, and Komodo's in-camera ProRes 422 HQ and 422 sit inside the app's stated ProRes ceiling of 4:2:2 HQ at 60 fps (2K ProRes at 120 fps is above that frame rate). Send whichever the camera recorded; if you shot R3D, the R3D is the file for questions about the negative. Playback is hardware-dependent, so test a short clip on the client's Mac first.

How much footage is on one Komodo card?

RED's R3D Quality page, measured at 6K 17:9 23.98 fps on a 512 GB CFast card, gives about 30 minutes at HQ, about 48 minutes at MQ and about 1 hour 17 minutes at LQ, and notes that actual data rate depends on scene complexity and capture settings. Uploads take files up to 5 TB each and resume if interrupted.

Let your client see the film you exported

Upload a short browser-compatible export and share it with one client. Check the picture, collect feedback and choose a paid plan when you need room for more films.
