The a7S III records UHD in three XAVC families, from 8-bit 4:2:0 Long GOP to 600 Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2 Intra. Here is which of those files a browser can play, which one to grade from, and the HEVC 10-bit export a client can open on a link.

What the camera records
A hybrid body,
three XAVC families, UHD only.
The a7S III is a stills and video body built around a full-frame 35.6 x 23.8 mm CMOS sensor of about 12.1 million effective pixels. For movies it writes XAVC HS (HEVC/H.265) and XAVC S (AVC/H.264) Long GOP, plus the all-intra XAVC S-I. Every 4K mode in Sony’s tables is 3840x2160.

Sony: 24p is 23.98 fps, 30p is 29.97 fps, 60p is 59.94 fps and 120p is 119.88 fps. 'Not listed' means Sony's table has no mode at that rate.
Two things in that table decide your workflow. First, 4K 120p exists only in the Long GOP formats, XAVC HS and XAVC S; the Intra format tops out at 60p. Second, XAVC S is the one family with 8-bit 4:2:0 modes, and XAVC HS is the one without a 30p or 25p row in 4K: for a 29.97 timeline in 4K, the choice is XAVC S or XAVC S-I.
The grading master
Pick 10-bit 4:2:2
before you press record.
If the footage will be graded, and S-Log3 footage always is, record one of the 10-bit 4:2:2 modes. The review export ends up 10-bit HEVC either way; what changes is how much the grade has to work with.
XAVC S-I (Intra)
10-bit 4:2:2 at every listed frame rate, 240 to 600 Mbps in 4K. The highest data rates in the table and the heaviest files, up to 60p.
XAVC HS or XAVC S, 4:2:2
10-bit 4:2:2 Long GOP at 50 to 280 Mbps in 4K (XAVC HS reaches down to 50 Mbps at 24p). The route to 4K 120p with full 4:2:2 colour for the grade.
XAVC S, 8-bit 4:2:0
Fine for S-Cinetone (PP11) or a look baked in camera that needs little correction. For S-Log3, 8-bit leaves the grade fewer code values to stretch.
The camera’s log options are S-Log2 and S-Log3, with S-Gamut, S-Gamut3.Cine and S-Gamut3 colour modes; Sony’s Picture Profile presets pair S-Log3 with S-Gamut3.Cine (PP8) or S-Gamut3 (PP9). On system software Version 4.00 or later, the help guide also documents a Log shooting page with Log Shooting Setting and LUT options. Whatever you monitor with on set, the recorded file is log, and the log is what leaves the card.
Why the chroma matters is covered in 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2 chroma subsampling. The short version: 4:2:2 keeps twice the colour samples of 4:2:0, which shows up in keys, skin and hard colour edges once the grade pushes saturation.
What plays where
The browser, the camera file,
and the macOS app is not the answer here.
uncompressed.io’s browser player takes H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265 including 10-bit 4:2:2 where the viewer’s device decodes it, and AV1, in MP4 or MOV. Here is what that means for each a7S III file.
The macOS app's supported camera originals are RED R3D, Blackmagic BRAW, Nikon N-RAW and ProRes up to 8K 4:2:2 HQ at 60 fps. XAVC, Sony X-OCN and ProRes RAW are not on that list.
Even where a device does decode the camera’s 10-bit 4:2:2 profile, an ungraded S-Log3 clip will look flat and washed out, because a browser shows the file as encoded and applies no LUT. The details of which devices decode what are in HEVC 10-bit 4:2:2 in the browser. For an a7S III shoot, the practical answer is simple: grade, then export.
The macOS app is built for a different job. Supported camera originals and Vault playback use the compatible macOS app; they are not universally playable in web browsers. XAVC is not among those originals, so do not plan an a7S III review around the app playing the card files.
The review export

Export H.265 Main10 (10-bit), MP4 or MOV, constant frame rate, 2-pass VBR, AAC audio at 320 kbps. The frame size is 3840x2160 or 1920x1080; the frame rate is your timeline’s.

Within a range, let the picture pick the number. Calm interview frames hold up at 40 to 50 Mbps. With a movie ISO range of 80 to 102,400 (extendable to 409,600), the a7S III is often shot in low light, and high-ISO grain, night rain, snow, water, foliage and fast pans are the busy frames that want 100 to 120 Mbps. A log grade that lifts shadows lifts their noise too, so err high on dark material.
For 120p, the Long GOP clip is almost always a slow-motion source: conform it to the 23.98 or 29.97 timeline and export at that rate with a constant frame rate. A 119.88 fps review file is not what the client is approving. Free export presets that carry these values for DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Media Encoder and Compressor are on the NLE page. Offload and grade
Copy the XAVC clips into your project. Grade the S-Log3 timeline or apply a transform to Rec.709, and conform any 120p to the timeline rate.
Export HEVC 10-bit
H.265 Main10, constant frame rate, 2-pass VBR, AAC 320 kbps, at the bitrate from the table. Watch the export once before it leaves the suite.
Upload and share
Uploads are resumable and take files up to 5 TB. The share link is the access, so the client needs no account; add a password per video if you want one.
Pull notes into the NLE
Comments carry author and timecode with red or green status. They come back as markers through a Resolve script, a Premiere Pro panel or a Final Cut Pro bundle.
The size gap is the reason for the export. A minute of XAVC S-I 4K at 600 Mbps is about 4.5 GB; the same minute as an 80 Mbps HEVC review file is about 0.6 GB (both computed: Mbps divided by 8, times 60 seconds). Replacing the file with a new cut keeps the link, notes and approvals, and colour or smoothness can still differ from device to device.

Frequently asked
Why does my a7S III footage look flat and grey on the client link?
Because it was shot in S-Log3 (PP8 or PP9) and sent without a grade. A browser shows the file exactly as it was encoded; it does not apply a LUT. Grade the timeline, or apply a transform to Rec.709, before you export the review file.
Can my client open the XAVC HS files straight off the card?
XAVC HS is HEVC, a codec family the browser player accepts, but a 10-bit 4:2:2 camera file plays only where the viewer's device decodes that profile, and ungraded S-Log3 will still look flat. A graded HEVC 10-bit export is the file to send. XAVC originals are not on the macOS app's supported list either.
Does the a7S III record DCI 4K?
The Sony help guides we read on 19 September 2026, including the Ver.3 or later guide, list 4K recording at 3840x2160 and list no DCI 4K format. Plan the review export at 3840x2160.
I shot 4K 120p. Should the review export be 120 fps?
No. The help guide lists 4K 120p only in the Long GOP formats, and it is usually conformed to a slower timeline for slow motion. Export at the timeline rate, for example 23.98 or 29.97, with a constant frame rate.
Can I share the RAW the a7S III sends over HDMI?
Sony states RAW movies cannot be recorded on the camera's card; RAW goes over HDMI to a RAW-compatible recorder, locked to S-Log3. No RAW format plays in a web browser through us. Grade it, then send a HEVC 10-bit export for review.
