Leak Shield and piracy protection

DRM vs forensic watermarking.
One locks the stream. The other traces the copy.

DRM and forensic watermarking are often sold as rivals. They answer different questions. DRM tries to stop a stream being copied; forensic watermarking tells you whose copy leaked when one gets out anyway. Large studios use both. uncompressed.io offers per-buyer forensic marks through Leak Shield and does not offer DRM, so this page explains both as fairly as we can.

Short answer

Should I use DRM video hosting or forensic watermarking?

DRM encrypts a video so only licensed players can decrypt it, which stops simple downloading and ripping. Forensic watermarking hides a mark in each viewer's picture so a leaked copy, including a screen recording, can be traced to the account. For an independent creator selling video, per-buyer marking usually does more; if a contract requires DRM, use a provider that offers it. uncompressed.io does not.

  • DRM encrypts the stream for licensed players
  • Forensic marks trace a found copy to its source
  • DRM cannot stop a camera or name a leaker
  • Marks do not stop copying; they deter and identify
  • Contracts may require DRM; then it is not optional
  • uncompressed.io offers marks (Leak Shield), not DRM

Definitions

What each one is
from the people who define them

DRM (digital rights management)

The video is encrypted, and only a licensed player with the right key can decrypt it. In browsers, the W3C's Encrypted Media Extensions specification defines the interface for playing encrypted media without itself defining a DRM system; decryption is handled by a content decryption module for each key system. Apple describes FairPlay Streaming as a way for content providers to encrypt content, securely exchange keys and protect playback on Apple platforms.

Forensic watermarking

An imperceptible identifier is hidden in the picture itself. The video plays normally anywhere. If a copy is found, detection software reads the identifier. When the identifier is different for each buyer or session, the copy tells you which account it came from.

Apple's developer page also notes that its server SDK requires membership in the Apple Developer Program, and that production credentials are approved only for teams providing a streaming service to consumers (read 12 October 2026). Other DRM systems have their own licensing paths. That overhead is a large part of why independent creators rarely run DRM themselves.

DRM descriptions from the W3C Encrypted Media Extensions draft and Apple's FairPlay Streaming page, read 12 October 2026. Heavy cropping, recompression or a camera recording can weaken a mark. Protection reduces risk and makes leaks traceable; it cannot guarantee a film never leaks or that every leak can be traced.

Choosing

When each one is the right call
honestly

Choose DRM when

A distributor, broadcaster or licence requires it, or your audience watches mostly on managed devices where it works smoothly and a clean rip would be costly.

Choose forensic marks when

You sell films, rentals or memberships to the public, care about screen recordings and sharing, and want to know who leaked so you can act.

Use both when

You are large enough to run DRM and have high-value releases. Studios commonly combine encryption with watermarking for exactly this reason.

uncompressed.io is built for the middle case. Leak Shield gives every buyer their own invisibly marked copy and searches the open web and torrent indexes weekly for the first month after release and monthly after. You review each sighting; on confirmation the buyer is identified and blocked, their membership is cancelled, a takedown notice is sent and a PDF case file is kept.

For pre-release review, the Vault plays films in the compatible macOS app with a session watermark. If a contract names a specific DRM, uncompressed.io is not the right host for that delivery.

The limit, for both

Protection reduces risk and makes leaks traceable; it cannot guarantee a film never leaks or that every leak can be traced. DRM has the same honest ceiling: no system stops a camera filming the screen.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is DRM video hosting?

DRM video hosting encrypts each stream and only releases the decryption keys to licensed players on supported devices, so the video cannot simply be downloaded and played elsewhere. In browsers, this runs through the Encrypted Media Extensions standard and a content decryption module.

What is the difference between DRM and forensic watermarking?

DRM encrypts the stream to make copying harder. Forensic watermarking hides an invisible mark in the picture so that a copy, once found, can be traced to its source. DRM aims to prevent; watermarking identifies.

Is DRM or forensic watermarking better?

For a large distributor with contracts that require it, DRM plus watermarking. For an independent creator selling films or memberships, a per-buyer forensic mark usually does more, because it works on screen recordings, deters sharing and names the leaker, without device restrictions.

Does DRM stop screen recording?

Not reliably. Some protected players on some devices hide the picture from some capture tools, but other devices and any camera still work. DRM also does not tell you who leaked a copy.

Does uncompressed.io offer DRM?

No. uncompressed.io does not offer DRM. It offers Leak Shield: per-buyer invisible marks, leak search of the open web and torrent indexes, and takedown notices.

When do I need DRM?

When a distributor, broadcaster or licensing contract requires it, or when you license studio content that comes with DRM obligations. In those cases, use a provider that offers the specific DRM systems the contract names.

Per-buyer marks, without DRM's overhead.

Leak Shield gives each buyer their own invisibly marked copy, searches for leaks and sends takedowns, for USD 99 a month or USD 1,188 a year on any paid plan. Protection reduces risk and makes leaks traceable; it cannot guarantee a film never leaks or that every leak can be traced.
