Your own streaming service

Indie film streaming platform.
Where an independent film can stream, and on whose terms.

An indie film streaming platform is any service that streams independent films to paying or subscribed viewers. For a filmmaker the useful question is not which one is biggest, but who decides whether your film gets on, who sets the price, what share you keep, and whether you ever learn who watched.

Short answer

What is a good streaming platform for an indie film?

It depends on whether you need reach or income per viewer. Curated services and aggregators put an indie film in front of viewers who would never find it, for a share; your own streaming platform keeps every sale and every buyer's email. uncompressed.io is the second kind, with 0% commission and films streamed as exported.

  • Curated services: reach, but they choose the films
  • Aggregators: large stores, for a share of channel revenue
  • OTT builders: your own channel, for a plan plus fees
  • Your own shop: 0% commission on uncompressed.io
  • Films stream as exported, with no re-encode
  • Buyers need no account to watch

Filmhub and Uscreen figures from their own pages, read 12 October 2026. Vimeo OTT Starter, also an OTT builder, lists USD 1 per subscriber a month and 10% of one-time purchases, web only. The streaming platform is included with every paid plan for members who switch it on before 31 December 2026, and stays included for them afterwards; after that date new activations add USD 39 a month.

Picture

How the film looks
is part of the platform choice

Most streaming platforms re-encode every upload to their own bitrate ladder. For a film shot on a tight budget, where the grade, the grain and the night scenes carry the look, that matters. Vimeo, for example, publishes a 4K maximum of 22 Mbps for playback.

uncompressed.io stores and streams the file as exported, with no additional video or audio re-encode. It does not restore detail lost at export, and viewers need a supported codec and enough bandwidth; an optional lighter copy covers slow connections. If you graded the film carefully, the version people pay for is the one you delivered.

Grain and texture

Re-encoding at lower bitrates smooths grain into blotches. Streaming the export keeps it.

Dark scenes

Shadows are where low bitrates show blocking first. They are also where indie films often live.

Sound

The audio streams as uploaded, so a careful mix reaches the viewer as mixed.

Combining

Use more than one
without giving up your audience

1

Check exclusivity

Before anything else, read what each deal locks up: territory, dates and kind of rights.

2

Open your own shop

Rental, purchase and download prices, a free preview cut, and country rules for any territory under contract.

3

Add reach

Submit to curated services and an aggregator for the viewers you cannot reach yourself.

4

Bring viewers home

Send your mailing list, festival audiences and press to your own shop, where you keep the sale.

Viewing hours

Each paid plan includes viewing hours a month for buyers and members (Lite 1,000, Pro 5,000, Max 15,000, Studio 25,000). Above that an extra block is added; playback never pauses.

Who this is not for: if you have no mailing list, no festival run and no social following, your own shop will be quiet. Start with an aggregator or curated submissions, build an audience, and open the shop for the next film. For the business side of selling one film, see sell your film online; for the models behind each platform, see video on demand platforms.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best streaming platform for indie films?

For reach, a curated service or an aggregator that places the film on large stores. For income per viewer and owning the audience, your own streaming platform with 0% commission. Many indie films use both: an aggregator for discovery, a direct shop for their own audience.

How do I get my indie film on a streaming service?

Curated services choose films themselves, usually through festivals, sales agents or submissions. Aggregators place films on channels for a share: Filmhub, for example, pays filmmakers 80% of what it receives from channels, per its help centre read 12 October 2026. Or you open your own streaming shop and need nobody's approval.

Can I put my indie film on my own streaming platform?

Yes. A hosted streaming platform gives you a shop under your name, with purchases, rentals, memberships and a player, without a developer. On uncompressed.io the shop runs at yourname.uncompressed.io/on-demand or on your own domain.

Do indie film streaming platforms pay per view?

Terms differ. Subscription services usually license films for a fee or share revenue by viewing; stores pay a share of each sale or rental. On your own platform you set the price and keep it, minus your card processor's fee.

Is my own platform better than an aggregator?

Not by default. An aggregator reaches viewers who would never find your shop. Your own platform pays more per viewer and keeps the buyer's email. If you have no audience yet, start with reach.

Stream your indie film under your own name.

Start free with 5 GB. Your own streaming platform, with purchases, rentals and memberships, comes with every paid plan (Lite USD 9, Pro USD 39, Max USD 99, Studio USD 219 a month) and takes 0% commission.
