Selling films and videos

Rent your film online.
A viewing window you set, a price you choose, 0% commission.

A rental lets a viewer pay a lower price to watch your film for a limited time. It is the easiest yes for someone who has never seen your work, and it sits next to a purchase rather than replacing it. This guide covers how rentals work, how long the window should be, and how to price it.

Short answer

What platform lets me rent my own film to viewers online?

A video shop that supports rentals with a viewing window. On uncompressed.io you set the rental price and how long the renter can watch, sell a purchase alongside it, and keep the whole price: there is 0% commission and the renter pays into your own payment account.

  • Viewers pay once to watch within a window
  • You set the window and the rental price
  • Offer a purchase next to it
  • 0% commission on uncompressed.io
  • Renters need no account
  • Refunds and free access from your earnings page

How rentals work

Price, window, access
in three parts

A rental is a purchase with an end date. Three settings define it, and each one changes who says yes.

The price

Lower than a purchase, so a curious viewer can try the film. It is the price that brings in people who would never pay to own.

The window

How long the renter can watch once they have rented. You set it per film, so a short and a feature can differ.

The access

Renters stream in the browser, or in your branded TV apps if you have them. When the window closes, playback stops; a purchase of the same film is unaffected.

Gumroad

after 10% + USD 0.50 per direct sale

On a low-priced rental, a fixed fee per sale bites hardest: USD 0.50 is more than 8% of a USD 6 rental on its own, before the percentage. That is why rentals reward a flat-fee platform. Card processing applies everywhere and is left out of these figures.

When a rental is the wrong product

If your audience already knows and loves your work, a rental can undercut purchases. Fans who would buy will rent instead. In that case sell the purchase alone, or open a membership. The streaming platform is included with every paid plan for members who switch it on before 31 December 2026, and stays included for them afterwards; after that date new activations add USD 39 a month.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is a platform to rent a movie online?

A rental platform lets a viewer pay once to stream a film for a limited time, then access ends. For an independent filmmaker, it means a shop page for the film where viewers rent it with a card, without joining a large store. uncompressed.io offers this with a viewing window you set and 0% commission.

How long should a film rental last?

Long enough to watch comfortably, short enough to feel like a rental. Many filmmakers choose 48 or 72 hours for a feature and up to a week for a series or a long documentary. On uncompressed.io you set the window yourself.

How much should I charge to rent my film?

Price the rental at roughly a third to a half of the purchase. If the purchase is USD 12, a rental at USD 4 to USD 6 gives viewers a real choice. Too close to the purchase price and nobody rents; too low and nobody buys.

Can a viewer rent and later buy the same film?

Yes. Rental and purchase are separate products. A viewer who rented and loved the film can buy it to keep streaming it.

Do renters need an account?

Not on uncompressed.io. They pay with their email and sign in later with the email they bought with.

Can I refund a rental?

Yes, from your earnings page, and you can give free access to a reviewer or a festival programmer the same way. Because the charge is on your own payment account, uncompressed.io cannot refund on your behalf.

Put your film up for rent today.

Rentals, purchases and downloads come with every paid plan (Lite USD 9, Pro USD 39, Max USD 99, Studio USD 219 a month). You set the window and the price; renters pay into your own payment account.
