Selling films and videos

Monetize videos.
Five ways viewers pay you directly, and what each earns.

Ads pay per view and pay little per view. Direct sales pay per viewer and pay far more per viewer. This guide covers the five direct models, purchases, rentals, memberships, downloads and bundles, with the arithmetic behind each, so you can pick the ones that fit your work and your audience.

Short answer

How do you monetize videos beyond ads?

Sell viewing directly: purchases, rentals, memberships, downloads and bundles. Each viewer pays you instead of an advertiser paying per view, so a small audience can earn real money. What you keep depends on the platform; on uncompressed.io the commission is 0% and the money goes to your own payment account.

  • Purchase: pay once, stream forever
  • Rental: pay less, watch within a set window
  • Membership: monthly or yearly, access to a library
  • Download: the file to keep, priced higher
  • Bundle: several films for one price
  • Platform shares range from 0% to 30% or more

The arithmetic

An illustration, not a forecast. Assumptions are stated under each figure; change them to match your own audience.

USD 720

Purchase, once

3% buy a USD 12 film

USD 500

Rental, once

5% rent at USD 5

USD 640

Membership, every month

4% join at USD 8 a month

USD 900

Bundle, once

1.5% buy a USD 30 box set

The membership figure repeats each month that members stay, which is why it overtakes a one-off sale within a few months. On a Pro plan at USD 39 a month, the plan is paid for by five members at USD 8.

Compare that with ads. YouTube's support page says partners receive 55% of net ad revenue on their public videos. The rate per thousand views varies by topic, country and season, and YouTube does not publish a fixed figure, so ads only pay well at very high view counts. Direct sales scale with how much your audience values the work, not with how many strangers watch.

Getting started

A sensible sequence
in the right order

1

Start with one film

Sell it as a purchase and a rental. The rental at about a third of the purchase price.

2

Add a free preview

A short preview cut on the film's page converts better than a description alone.

3

Group the back catalogue

Turn older work into a bundle once you have three or more titles.

4

Open a membership

When you publish regularly, a monthly or yearly tier covers the whole library.

When ads are still the better choice

If your videos are short, broad and aimed at people who do not know you yet, free distribution with ads builds the audience that later pays. Many creators keep a free channel for reach and sell the longer work in their own shop. See how to sell videos online for the setup.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I monetize videos?

Either sell attention (ads, sponsorships) or sell viewing (purchases, rentals, memberships, downloads, bundles). Ads need very large view counts. Direct sales work with a small audience that values the work, because each viewer pays you directly.

What is the most profitable way to monetize videos?

For a dedicated audience, memberships usually earn the most over time because they repeat every month. A purchase earns once. Many creators combine them: a membership for the library, purchases or rentals for new releases.

How much does YouTube pay for ads?

YouTube's own support page says partners receive 55% of net revenues from ads displayed on their public videos, and 70% of net revenues from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks (read 12 October 2026). What that is per view varies widely and YouTube does not publish a fixed rate.

Can I monetize videos without YouTube?

Yes. A shop on your own site or a creator platform lets viewers buy, rent, download or subscribe. You bring the audience from social posts, a mailing list or your own site. uncompressed.io takes 0% commission on these sales.

Should I sell or rent my film?

Offer both. A rental at a lower price brings in viewers who would not pay to own; a purchase serves fans who want to rewatch. Price the purchase at roughly two to three times the rental so the choice is clear.

Which model should I avoid?

Avoid downloads for anything that loses value once it circulates, such as a premiere. A downloaded file cannot be taken back. Stream it first, and sell the download later or at a higher price.

Turn on every model from one shop.

Purchases, rentals, downloads, bundles and memberships come with every paid plan (Lite USD 9, Pro USD 39, Max USD 99, Studio USD 219 a month). 0% commission; buyers pay into your own payment account.
