Selling films and videos
Selling videos online for cash.
What actually pays, and what the platform keeps.
There is no quick money in selling videos. There is steady money for people who make video a specific audience values, sell it directly, and keep most of the price. This page sets out what pays, what each platform takes, and how many buyers it really takes to earn a meaningful sum.

Short answer
Can you make real money selling videos online?
Yes, if you sell video that a specific audience values directly to that audience, and keep most of the price. Earnings are buyers times price minus the platform's share, which ranges from 0% on uncompressed.io to 45% of net on YouTube ads. There is no shortcut: the work is building the audience that pays.
- Money = buyers x price, less the platform's share
- Direct sales to your own audience pay best
- Platform shares run from 0% to 45%
- Memberships repeat; one-off sales do not
- No platform brings buyers you have not reached
- Beware anyone promising guaranteed income
What pays
Where the cash comes from
and what mostly does not
Pays: direct sales to fans
Films, series, tutorials and extras sold as purchases, rentals, downloads, bundles or memberships to people who already follow you.
Pays: memberships
Monthly or yearly tiers. Smaller per payment, but they repeat, and a few hundred members add up to a dependable monthly sum.
Pays slowly: ad revenue
YouTube pays partners 55% of net ad revenue on public videos. It needs very large view counts before it is meaningful.
Rarely pays: hoping to be discovered
Uploading to a store and waiting. Marketplaces help, but most sales still come from audiences the creator brought.

The honest numbers
How many buyers it takes
for a monthly target
Work backwards from what you want to earn. USD 1,000 a month is 100 sales at USD 10, or 125 members at USD 8, or 34 sales of a USD 30 bundle. That is not an enormous audience, but each of those people has to know you exist and want what you made.
If you have no audience yet, start there: post the free work, collect emails, show the quality. Then sell. For the mechanics of setting up a sale, read how to sell videos online.

Questions
Frequently asked
Can you really sell videos online for cash?
Yes, but the money comes from buyers who already value your work, not from uploading and waiting. Creators who earn steadily sell films, series, tutorials or extras directly to an audience they built, and keep most of each sale.
How much money can I make selling videos?
It is buyers times price, less the platform's share. Fifty sales at USD 10 is USD 500 gross; how much of that you keep ranges from all of it before card fees at 0% commission to USD 450 at a 10% plus USD 0.50 fee. There is no typical figure; anyone who promises one is selling something.
What is the fastest way to get paid for videos?
Sell to people who already follow you. A mailing list or an engaged social following converts far better than strangers. On uncompressed.io each sale is charged on your own payment account, so the money is yours from the moment of sale, on your processor's payout schedule.
Which platform takes the smallest cut?
On 12 October 2026: uncompressed.io takes 0% commission (you pay a plan); Patreon lists 10% of income earned; Gumroad 10% plus USD 0.50 per direct sale and 30% through Discover; Vimeo OTT 10% plus USD 0.50 per transaction; YouTube pays creators 70% of net membership revenue and 55% of net ad revenue.
Is selling videos online a scam?
Selling your own videos is not. Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay upfront to be told how to make money, promises guaranteed income, or asks for your login details. A real platform states its fees on a public pricing page.
Do I need a big audience?
No, but you need an audience. A hundred people who pay USD 10 is USD 1,000. Ten thousand people who will not pay is nothing. Build the small, specific audience first.
Keep the whole price of every sale.
Purchases, rentals, downloads, bundles and memberships come with every paid plan (Lite USD 9, Pro USD 39, Max USD 99, Studio USD 219 a month), with 0% commission paid into your own payment account.
