Selling films and videos

Video sales analytics.
Five views that answer the questions you actually ask.

A view count tells you almost nothing about a film you sell. What you need to know is who watched to the end, who paid, how much comes back every month, where buyers gave up, and which post or partner sent them. This guide sets out the numbers that answer those questions and what to do with each.

Short answer

Which analytics should you track when you sell videos online?

Track five things: engagement (what is watched and finished), audience (who buys and returns), money (revenue by kind of sale and monthly recurring revenue), the funnel from visit to play, and the sources that send buyers. The uncompressed.io analytics hub shows all five for your streaming service and exports them to CSV.

  • Engagement: hours watched, started, finished, average % watched
  • Audience: new and returning buyers, members, countries, devices
  • Money: gross, orders, average order, MRR, refunds, coupons
  • Funnel: visits, film views, checkouts, paid, plays
  • Sources: UTM campaigns and referring sites, with revenue
  • CSV export of orders, viewers and events

Reading the funnel

Where buyers give up
one drop at a time

The funnel is the most useful view and the least used. Find the step with the biggest drop and fix that one thing.

Many visits, few film views

The shop front is not doing its job. Better artwork, a clearer title row, a series row for episodic work.

Many film views, few checkouts

The film page does not convince. Add a free preview cut, a short description that says what it is, and a rental at a lower price.

Many checkouts, few paid

Price surprise at checkout. Test a lower rental, or a coupon for a launch week.

Many paid, few plays

Buyers forgot or could not find it. Remind them in your next post or newsletter that they sign in with the email they bought with.

Sources and UTM

Which link sold the film
so you stop guessing

A UTM tag is a short label added to a link, such as ?utm_source=newsletter. When a visitor arrives through it, the analytics hub records that source; when they buy, the order carries it too. Links without a tag fall back to the referring site, and visits with neither count as direct.

Tag every link you control differently: one for the newsletter, one per social platform, one per partner. After a month you will know which of them brings buyers rather than visitors. Pair each partner with their own coupon code and you have two independent counts that should agree.

1

Tag your links

utm_source for the channel, utm_campaign for the launch.

2

Share them

Newsletter, social bios, partner posts, festival pages.

3

Read sources

Visits, orders and revenue per source after a few weeks.

4

Move effort

Do more of what sells; stop what only brings visits.

Money

Recurring and one-off revenue
without a spreadsheet

MRR

Monthly recurring revenue from active memberships, with yearly members counted at a twelfth of their price. Gift memberships are left out because nobody is paying monthly for them.

Revenue by kind

Purchases, rentals, downloads, bundles and memberships side by side, so you see which product carries the business.

Refunds and coupons

How many refunds and how much, and how many orders used each coupon code.

What these numbers do not include

The figures show what buyers paid. Your card processor's fees and your taxes are on your own payment account's statements, and the CSV export is the easiest way to reconcile the two. The streaming platform is included with every paid plan for members who switch it on before 31 December 2026, and stays included for them afterwards; after that date new activations add USD 39 a month.

Questions

Frequently asked

What are video sales analytics?

Video sales analytics are the numbers that link viewing to money: what was watched and finished, who bought, what each kind of sale earned, recurring membership revenue, where visitors dropped out before paying, and which links and campaigns brought the buyers.

What is MRR for a video creator?

MRR, monthly recurring revenue, is what your active memberships bring in each month. Yearly members count as their yearly price divided by twelve. It is the number that tells you whether a membership is growing.

How do I know which post sold my film?

Add UTM tags to the links you share, for example utm_source=newsletter. The uncompressed.io analytics hub groups visits, orders and revenue by UTM source, then by referring site, then direct.

What is a sales funnel for video?

The steps from a visit to a play: shop visits, film page views, checkouts started, paid orders and plays. The biggest drop between two steps is where to work first.

Can I export my sales data?

Yes. The analytics hub exports orders, viewers and events to CSV, so you can open the numbers in a spreadsheet or hand them to an accountant.

Is a completion rate more useful than views?

For a film you sell, yes. A buyer who finishes is likely to buy again and to recommend it. A low average watched percentage on one title tells you something a view count never will.

See what your films earn, and why.

The analytics hub comes with the streaming platform on every paid plan (Lite USD 9, Pro USD 39, Max USD 99, Studio USD 219 a month), with 0% commission on what you sell.
