Selling video

How to sell videos online.
Pick the fee model first, then the platform.

To sell videos online you need three things: a place that plays the file, a way to take payment, and a way to give only the buyer access. The platforms differ mostly in how they charge: a percentage of each sale, a flat monthly fee, or a fee per subscriber. The right one depends on how much you sell.

Three fee models

How a platform charges
decides most of the bill.

The math

When a flat fee
beats a percentage.

Take a $10 film. Gumroad keeps 10% plus $0.50, so $1.50 a sale. The On Demand add-on is $39 a month, so it costs less than Gumroad’s cut from the 27th sale of the month onward (26 sales x $1.50 = $39). Add a Lite hosting plan at $9 and the crossover moves to the 33rd sale. On our side you still pay your own card processing fees, and on Gumroad’s side the percentage includes tax collection you would otherwise handle.

At a $25 download price Gumroad keeps $3, so the add-on alone breaks even at 13 sales a month. Selling a few copies a year, a percentage model is cheaper and simpler. Selling steadily every month, the flat fee wins and keeps winning as volume grows.

Who should pick something else

Pick Vimeo OTT or Uscreen if you want a subscription channel or TV apps; we sell single films, not memberships. Pick a percentage store like Gumroad if you sell a handful of copies a year or want the platform to collect sales tax for you.

Before you sell

Five steps,
in order.

1

Export a master you are proud of

The buyer sees what you upload. Check the file plays cleanly on a laptop and a phone.

2

Decide stream, download or both

Streaming keeps the file on the platform; a download hands the buyer the file for good.

3

Cut a short preview

A trailer or the first minutes sells better than a poster alone.

4

Price against your audience, not the platform

Check what comparable films in your niche charge, then work out the fee at that price with the math above.

5

Send people to one page

A single shop address in your bio, newsletter and festival materials.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can I still sell videos on Vimeo?

Not through Vimeo On Demand. Vimeo blocked new uploads on 22 August 2026 and new purchases and subscriptions on 21 September 2026, processed final seller payouts on 24 September 2026, and shuts the platform down on 20 November 2026. Vimeo points sellers to Vimeo OTT, whose Starter plan lists $1 per subscriber a month plus 10% of one-time purchases.

What is the cheapest way to sell a video online?

It depends on volume. A percentage model costs nothing when you sell nothing, so it wins for occasional sales. A flat monthly fee wins once your monthly sales pass the point where the percentage would cost more than the flat fee. The table on this page works that point out.

Do I need to handle sales tax?

On some platforms, no: Gumroad states it has been the merchant of record since 1 January 2025 and collects sales tax worldwide. When the charge is made on your own payment account, as with Uncompressed On Demand, sales tax and VAT are yours to handle.

Sell your films for a flat $39 a month.

Uncompressed On Demand is an add-on, $39 a month, 20,000 viewing hours a month included, 0% of any sale. The charge is made on your own payment account; your provider's card processing fees still apply.
